Panasonic dmr-ex773 no sound from DVD or HDD recordings

I have a Panasonic dmr-ex773 which is a number of years old. This evening whilst watching a per-recorded DVD I paused it and when I started it again there was no sound. Also there is no sound on recordings stored on the HDD. When watching live TV there is sound, which means that the connection from teh PVR to the TV (which is via HDMI) must be okay.

Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it?

Sorry, I forgot to say that I tried that. The PVR does not have an on/off button so I switched it off, pulled the power cord out, waited a couple of minutes and plugged the power cord back in.

This caused it to loose the list of channels, favourites, etc, so I think it should have sorted out any transient issues.

One thing I noticed since earlier on. I tried playing a recording from the HDD and got no sound, but when I went to 1.3 times the speed there is sound.

I presume you mean live TV from the EX773's tuner.... not the TV's tuner?

That should definitely NOT happen under such circumstances.

The problem is likely to lie in IC30001 (LV7107)

Sound problems are nearly always due to this chip.
The chip is very complex and handles numerous video functions too which probably will account for some of the other otherwise inexplicable behaviors.

It is a 100 pin chip - only replaceable by specialists. No longer made but still obtainable.

And it seem that the relevant parts of this chip are not dead but dying.

The following day I went to watch something with subtitles (so I did not need the sound) and it played okay, with sound at normal and 1.3 times normal. Also there is sound on DVDs.

One time since then a recording on the HDD did not have sound at normal normal speed but did do so at 1.3 times normal. But after that it has been okay again.

When the shops are open again I will get a new machine.
