Panasonic DMR-ES10 Which recording mode to use?

The manual says there are four recording modes: XP(high Quality) SP(Normal) LP (Long Play) and EP (Extended Play). But it doesn't give any indication what sort of resolution you will get using the diferent modes.

I want to transfer recordings from VHS and S-VHS.
As the dvd recorder does not improve the picture quality, please can anyone tell me which one of the above four modes would equate to the same picture quality as VHS and also S-VHS.

Thanks very much

I tend to use SP for all my recordings unless I want to fit more than 2 hours per DVD.

If you want to record a three hour VHS tape then use the FR (flexible record) mode. Set it for 3 hours. You will not notice much difference and it will be as good as VHS.
