Panasonic DMR E95H startup problem

I have just reconnected the above after a week or so to enable a reorganization of my devices. There is no disc loaded and HDD light is on.

1. After self check the message "Error has occurred, please press enter" is displayed on TV screen.
2. Pressing enter results in disc slot opening and another self check
3. Message " please change the disc " is displayed.
4. Pressing enter or return closes disc slot and a return to message at 1.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I have many recordings on the HDD I would like to recover.
