    Hi

My Order is in for a Panasonic TH-42PWD7

Before the ink has dried – I thought I’d ask a potentially lame question
I showed the missus the screen last night in another shop – Her response to which was it’s nice but looks a bit small, and I agreed.

When I demoed the screen there was a 42PWD6 with a charcoal bezel there as well.
The silver model was on the wall and the charcoal on a stand but the same distance away

Now weird thing was that the charcoal version looked appreciably bigger – Initially I thought the silver one was a 37”

The guys in the shop explained that it was because the silver model was on the wall and the charcoal on a stand – And when switched around the Charcoal one would look smaller – But I’m not so sure

Has anybody else had a chance to compare the two models and feel that there appears to be an perceived difference in size

    Many thanks

    RON

Hawklan - I've had a silver Samsung 42S3 42" and a charcoal Panasonic PW6 42" in my lounge - both on their respective table-top stands about 12 ft away from me sitting on a 32" high entertainment unit.

At first, before seeing the charcoal Panasonic 42" - I really wanted the charcoal finish - thinking it would be better - less distracting from the image etc etc

NOW after I've seen both - to my eyes the 42" image on the charcoal Panasonic actually looked SMALLER than the 42" image on the silver Samsung!

Plus the silver finish just looked more pleasing to my eye !

Before you ask - yes I did measure the diagonal - both were 42" !!!!

So, I switched to wanting silver instead and now have ordered a silver PWD7!

Be warned though - you will soon get used to 42" and start thinking what all the fuss is about - oh dear - is it going to be toooo big !!!!

    Listen it's never too big :D !!!

    Gussie :)

Only my opinion but the silver looks more modern than charcoal and, at the end of the day, its not how big it looks but what you do with it that counts :D

Seriously, would the silver be a better match with your other AV gear (dont know as it wasnt mentioned)

The bezel thing is interesting since these are commercial panels and are really made for that purpose.

Ideally for HC use you really want a dark a bezel as possible, reason being your eyes perceive a better contrast if you have a dark contrast around the picture.

It's the reason why consumer panels tend to have black bezels. ;)

all panny panels have a black border to the glass panel........ the silver charcoal bit is just the casing.....more ambient light will reflcet of a silver bezel with possible detrent to picture quality tho...

Now this is interesting and may have been covered before

But strolling around Selfridges looking at Plasmas (again!) - I actually asked one of the store staff to measure two plasmas
a Panny 42 PW7 and some sony machine - Because the sony just looked so much bigger
The PW7 had a visible image of just over 41" due to the black border within the glass which seems to be common with there range
The sony visible image however was 42 and a half inches diagonal
So are we back to the old CRT situation on the Panny range where even though the glass is 42" we loose a inch or so due to this black border

Exactly, the black bezel is in your periphery vision and fools the eye because it draws the contrast to the centre of the screen. Enhances the perceived contrast levels.

Same principle applies to PJ screens which is why they have a black border and not just a blank piece of canvas.

Strictly speaking, one screen is made for commercial purposes and one for consumer uses.
