I'm considering buying my first plasma screen in the near future and would appreciate some advice.
Up to now I've only looked around in stores which seems a bit of a waste of time, because, if I went off what I saw, I would stick with my CRT. I will look in more specialised dealers soon.

From what I have read on this forum and elsewhere, the Panasonic seems highly regarded and also the Pioneer (some others too, but I have to start somewhere!).

What I would like to know is the following:-

    1. Apart from the higher cost, are there any disadvantages in buying the 50" Panasonic (or Pioneer etc) over the 42", such as brightness of image? By the way, my viewing distance would be around 9 - 11 feet, depending on where I site the screen.

    2. Does anyone really regret not buying a 50" screen having bought a 42"?

    3. Same question as 2. but the other way around!

    4. Is it worth or do I need to buy the tuner to use a satellite receiver and DVD?

    5. What is the best method of connecting a DVD which has component out (not progressive)?

    6. I believe the Panasonics comes with a one card. Which card is the best option?

    7. Would it be worth upgrading to aprogressive scan DVD in the future?

    8. Is it correct that a Panasonic series 7 is on it's way soon?

    9. Are there any makes of wall mount that are better and cheaper than others?

    10. Am I the only one accused of not being satisfied with what I've got and going into a second childhood!!?

As you can probably tell, I don't know much about this subject!!

Thanks in advance for any advise you may offer.

    Steve.

    1. I think the larger screens have a slightly less bright and less contrasty image, but only very slightly.

    2. N/A (going 4 a 42 though)

    3. Not got my 42 yet but I believe it will be fine.

    4. You don't need the tuner for that.

    5. Connect via 3 RCA Phono plugs (Component in to plasma)

    6. I think the best option is the dual card with Component, Svideo and Composite. The scart is a bit soft I believe.

    7. Definately if you get a progressive scan plasma, no if you go for the ALiS models from Hitachi / Fujutsu / Philips.

    8. I have heard a rumour on this forum to this effect, it's on it's way but when is another matter.

    9. Yes, I have just bought a good one from AVSales via the power buy on this forum, looks good and is very slim.

    10. I doubt that very much

    8. Can't imagine thats gonna be soon given the six is fairly new. I'd imagine at least another 8 months and a month after that people will be asking when the 8-series is due. I've just bought and not a single worry about obsolescence.

    8. According to Fujitsu, the 7 series is next October, they have what is effectively a 7 series model out in January. They would say that of course, but it appears to be true. The new fuji will be about £3.5k, but spec is not really that different to 6 series, so don't get too excited. As to the rest, I agree with all that's said. Mount wise, if you want to stick it flat on the wall, the Unicol is the flattest. If you want to swing it about, the unicol is the ugliest thing you ever saw! Tuners, avoid them like a dose.... especially Panasonic, I might consider the pioneer. If you need another TV tuner, most DVD recorders, all videos, and freeview boxes will do that for you.

Thanks to all for the advise. The replies were much faster than expected!

So to summarise, 50" over 42"- no great loss, I would need an RCA phono component lead for the DVD, a dual video card with component, S video and composite, a Unicol wall mount, a progressive scan DVD when funds permit, forget the tuner and not to worry about the 7 series!

    A few more questions!!

How would my satellite receiver using RGB output connect into the above mentioned dual video card?

MAW - Are you saying that Fujitsu's version of the Panasonic series 7 is out in January as opposed to a "genuine" Panasonic series 7 next October? Would £3.5k be for a 42" or 50"? From what I have read I thought that Panasonic made 50" panels for Fujitsu, and Fujitsu's 42" panels were made in conjunction with Hitachi, or is this wrong?

50 is the one to get if your budget permits. The pixels are smaller than the ones in 42 and there is more of them. You can comfortably use it as a PC monitor and browse the Net in your living room, you will actually be able to read the webpages.

You're right all round, but fuji do make a panny based 42" as well, which the new model of is coming out in Jan.

If you want to get a plasma, I would say, if you can get the 50", get it, when I saw it compared to the 42" I had, it looked better and well, its bigger :)
