I was at home at lunch time today and the TV was on (I think) Channel 4.

Anyway a Fred Astaire film started and the set flipped from 14:9 into Cinema mode (for non-anamorphic widescreen pictur).

I noticed that there were black bands and was impressed that they were transmitting a 2.35:1 film in OAR.

Unfortunately as soon as the credits were finished the black bands disappeared and the rest of the film was 1.78:1.

I suppose at least it wasn't transmitted at 4:3.

I think it's standard practice to show the titles in original ratio just so that all the text fits on. Either that or they have to squash it. Watch out for tall thin cowboys at the end of a western. It's been done for years.

Mind you, I got excited when 101 Dalmations was on the other week and seemed to be showing in full width, but of course it switched to full screen after the titles.
