I am setting up a new home cinema system in my new house based around a Panasonic 42PWD6 Plasma. I believe this plasma supports NTSC and PAL Progressive scan. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced DVD (up to £350) which does both NTSC and PAL Prog scan. I was looking at the new Pioneer 565 which outputs NTSC and you can set it up via the menu to only output NTSC thus giving me NTSC prog scan from PAL DVDs but I was concerned about the PQ quality considering all the conversions taking place i.e. 25 frames to 30 frames and then line doubling.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

For a cheap and cheerful player with a considerably better image quality the Sony 730 is pretty good, certainly with my AE300 projector, at £149 it's around the cheapest with PS .. if you want SACD ability and a slightly better PQ then the Sony 930 is a good buy at around £250.

The Pioneer 565 has bothe SACD and DVD-A, and an incredible price of about £199.

Another favourite is the HK DVD25 with is around £350, or quite possibly less.

There are others but I these 4 get mentioned a lot. Use the Search facility, you'll find many threads on this subject.

    Choices, choices. :D

BTW, these links are all from the same retailer only because I happen to have them bookmarked and that's where I got my 730.

Thanks vonhosen but I query the DVD 25 because I have just read the HCC review for it and it says "But there is a rather important restriction: component video and progressive scan are only available with NTSC R1 discs". PAL progressive scan maybe available if you set it to multi-region if so can anyone confirm.

PAL prog scan does work on DVD 25 mate no worries must have been an old reveiw.
IF the PWD6 accepts DVI then a DVI player maybe the way to go, Samsung do a relatively cheap one and on a PJ difference is supposed to be big!

I think HK updated the firmware as there was a disc floating around at one time that enabled PAL PS and MR, I think it is standard on new ones but if unsure check with retailer.

Hornydragon the Panny does have a DVI input card available does anyone think it would produce better pictures then the component input and if so are there any DVD players around with DVI outputs.

I have been reading various threads about DVI on the Panasonic and they appear to be negative apparently because it has trouble supporting 480p let alone 576p which would have to be compressed anyway because it has a resolution of 852X480. It might improve lipsync problems as it should bypass the AtoD and DtoA therefore reducing the video delay to the screen by at least a frame or maybe 2 frames.
