Hi folks, been out of the loop for a while..... I currently use my Mac (and sometimes PC to watch movies on my Panny PTAE100 PJ. I use a HTPC/MAC because I like prog scan, and I can get pixel perfect.

I have noticed that PAL & NTSC prog scan dvd players are common and cheap now.

Can anyone recommend a PAL/NTSC (both) prog scan player, say within £350 and are the results as impressive as using a PC?

I'm looking at this because frankly, I'm tired of tweaking my computers and want to simply use a commercial player (and my bird can use it too).

I've looked at an ad for a Sony NS730 which is only £149!! It says it has prog scan outputs - what does this mean - does it have a vga socket, or an extra set of component outs? (Sony's site is useless!)

    Thanks

    R

Normally the usual suspect brands at that price range output prog scan via the component output.

A HK DVD25 or marantz DV4300/4400 could be yours for that money (using YUV) for PS image!
I reconmend the HK personally Limited edition 506 is same player in a nicer package!

I've done some reading on the DVD 25. Am I to understand, that after running the hack CD it will play both reg 1 and 2 in Prog scan. The review here seems to imply it will only prog scan for R1 discs?

Do you have a link for more info on the Marantz dv4400, I can't find any mention of it being progressive scan.

    cheers

Well the DVD25 is superb. Tested it last night with NTSC & PAL progressive and it is stunning. Works perfectly, looks and sounds great :)

I didn't look at the cheaper ones simply because I have just spent £1000's on a new speaker and sub setup and thought "why skimp on the source"

Most pleased. Not more dicking about with htpc!

I asked Marantz yesterday whether the 4400 was ps. The answer was no - apparently they are saving this feature together with Faroudja for high end products. Seems like a bit of a turn around from the 4300

    Hornydragon,

Why do yo rate the HK players so highly? Are they a cut above most other 'budget' prog scan DVD decks?

I would like to know as in the market for a new DVD deck myself, and the HK machines look fine, but I have never seen the PQ.

    Would they suit a Panny AE300 ?

    Thanks,

    Cap:)

I rate them so highly as they are bloody good!
good value good machine and easy to use!
will suit any PJ or plasma that is PS enabled!
compared to the sub £200 machines i cant comment but when compared to much more expensive player quality is still there and half the money i friend/work associate is very big in Projectors and for component demos he uses a DVD25 which he rates higher than the Arcam DV88+ he had (a lot of people wont be happy about their £1000 unit being bettered or at least equalled by one that is a third of the price.) also running it in PAL PS is so simple you dont even notice the fact! (operation wise)
I will say however i dont own one of these. (use one a lot though)
But if i get a PS display then its going to take an awful lot to get me to buy anything else!

I agree. The ease of use is a big plus. Everything works out of the box. Also, it has a great "info" screen that shows, during playback, the video mode, audio mode etc etc, Most useful. And it's black and shiny

Also, they guy in the shop I use, who I have good reason to trust used to work for HK (not any more) and said that the HK25 is by far the best player for £300 you can get at the moment. Don't know if it is worth the extra £150 over the comparable Sony, but I have good faith in the HK brand and not so much in Sony (two mini hifis I have of Sony's packed up just out of warranty)
