My Packard Bell Imedia 1459 has started to turn its self on with out me touching the power button ( 5 times in the last two days ). I know its 5 years old but its quite scary when it happens in the middle of the night. Any clues? I am running XP Student OP system.:)

First thing would be to rule out a dodgy or sticky connection. Take the side panel off and give it a good clean. Try reseating all front panel connectors (take note where they go first) and also wipe clean the actual on off button (outside and inside). If the sytem is 5 years old then it could well be a build up of grime and grease.

Make sure your running an anti-virus, anti-malware and a firewall. Run full scans regularly to check for spyware etc.

Make sure in the BIOS the options for "WAKE ON..." are disabled.

Try updating drivers for modem sometimes could be a wake on LAN error.

+ if its in the sleep make sure you do not have any high power devices connected to usb or check earlier mentioned WAKE ON options

Thank you for the advice, I think I have found the source of the problem. I have a maxtor external drive and when I unplug the power for the drive the PC does not start up as soon as I shut down. That was the easy bit now how do I fix the fault with the maxtor external drive. Once the PC is running I can connect the power lead to the maxtor external drive and all my documents are there. I have had the drive for 2 years plus and have always left it connected to the power and the PC, its only in the last 2 months that this has started. It's not a shared PC and I not one for fiddling when something is running ok. Any clues?
