I'm not finding any useful information about this situation, so am turning to AVF for help.

The reason I'm asking is my partner's son would like to trade in his 360 S and get an Xbox One for his 11th birthday. The 360 has been great, thanks to a large catalogue of cheap pre-owned games, but he doesn't have a Live account, as I don't feel it's suitable for him, knowing what it's like regarding bad language and the like you can be subjected to in multiplayer.

I've nearly always had Gold myself, so don't know what it's like to use the 360 or X1 without it.

After Microsoft's infamous u-turn, how will he find the X1 compared to the 360 without Live Gold?

In my really honest opinion, bad language etc is everywhere, music, tv, on the bus, in town etc. Yes you will get it on live, but two things....
1. Hearing it and not responding or repeating it i would say is better then hiding it, because kids need to know they are bad words, people say them, that's just that. Doesnt mean he will go round effin and jeffin.

2. If your worried about language on live, i assume you are also making sure he is sticking to the pegi ratings on the games? In which case he'd.more then likely.only be playing kids games with other kids?
Can't hide the bad language on xbox live but then allow him to play cod or bf4 where there is swearing and killing in the game play lol.

I personally didnt have gold on 360 and for a month on xbox one, don't like playing online and.you don't need gold any more to use iplayer etc, but I'd just let the kid have gold, give him a chance to be responsible.

You can currently get live for £25.90 from CD Keys. That works out at £2.16 ish a month.

In April you are getting 2 Xbox one games and 4 360 games.

If it was me I would keep the 360s and just buy a Xbox One. You can use the same live account on both at the same time.

Just stop worrying about him playing online and let him. I also agree with selecting the type of games. COD, BF and the likes are a no. Would you buy him porn ? NO !!!!!! That's the same way you have to look at these games. They are 18 for a reason.

I am sure you could build him a decent amount of good fiends to play games with. That's the key good friends mean happy times online.

I use my Xbox one without live with no issues so you will have no issue there. As for bad language etc you can mute players in game that use language if that's an option for you.

As said above you get free games with gold every month as well so might be worth getting live for that too

Best answer!
The main point being that you can't go around saying "no Xbox Live because of bad language" if you're letting him play GTA, GoW or CoD, which is littered with bad language.

Agree with what others have also said about the free games too, being 11 I'm guessing means he needs to ask to buy games, one free every month would keep him and your bank happy lol

He hasn't said he's playing those games though?

If he's after an X1 to play with friends then not having gold is going to out an end to that I think. But should be fine for SP stuff. Although I'd agree with others. Gold is decent value considering you get a new game every 4 weeks or whatever it is. Also pick up EA access if your after cheap games.

It will be the same as the 360. You just need Gold for MP and Free Games I believe.

But that should not stop him from having Gold imo. You can be very specific with the privacy settings and able to restrict any messages or voice chat to just friends only or block everything but he can still play on-line and enjoy games with gold.

Im probably different to alot of parents, maybe because I'm not that old myself, but growing up i used to play what i could get, quake, Duke nukem l, unreal tournament, gta. I don't swear any more than the next guy, i was always told if I swear, the games and tv goes.

Personally I played gta v with my 2yo when it came out, she had a while of a time driving the fire engine about.
Personally I'd let her play an 18 game when she's 12, kids needs to accept the world isn't red roses and butterflies, as long as the actions aren't repeated i dont have a problem.
Afterall she watches the teletubbies and she doesn't talk like a spanner, she watches family guy and doesn't repeat it, but because she's heard the words from other places, she's knows what are bad words, and makes a point of telling people when they use them lol.

I'd be far more worried about the prat walking in front of you waving his fag smoke about not giving a chap about the people behind them or the chavs swearing in town on a busy Saturday etc.

Give him a chance.to prove he's old enough to hear the language, see the violence and not repeat it, imo that's better then sheltering them, they are going to see and hear it one day?

Just like sex.I guess, hide it enough and curiosity gets the better of them, except then it's usually.to late.....and trust me I know with that one lol

What games are people playing to hear all this stuff? I barely hear any in game chat stuff now as everyone is using parties. Can't remember the last time I heard swearing from chat (other than in my own party).

If you have gold, you should make the Xbox One your home console, meaning he would have access to gold and it's benefits. But take the time to go through the parental controls, to prevent him from hearing the bad language and things you would rather he didn't experience. Otherwise the console is fine without gold.

Thanks for the parenting advice, but don't worry, he's not wrapped in Bubble Wrap.

If it helps I have my son's account set up so he can't hear anyone that isn't on his friends list and so far just me and his cousin are on his list people can't randomly message him either.

Infact mine is also set up like that too i can't be doing with listening to how some dude was chatting up a hot chick but she rejected him at kicking out time, or some guys wife screaming at him because he spends to long on the xbox or those mouth breathers that chew the mic.

He's 6 though so a lot less switched on than your youngen will be so has passwords to open apps all mature games and content is not allowed.

I have smartglass linked up to his account too so can keep an eye on him, the worst thing i've had to deal with is him liking every one of my achievements unlocked statuses :D

Seriously? Haven't you heard that adage "Sticks and stones freakin break some bones... but words can't hurt him!" GET THAT KID IN BUBBLE WRAP!

Sorry I didn't mean to patronise? Or offend you, was just explaing my viewpoint, guess I was just saying what I'm going to do, not what you should if that makes sense.
Either way, was just offering advice mate.

It will work exactly like it does now on the 360. You can still play single player games :)

To all, I'm not offended by any advice shared in this thread and didn't mean for my 'Bubble Wrap' post to suggest that.

As said above, there are plenty of settings that can be configured to protect or shield kids from stuff you dont want any risk of them being subjected to online. Also if the accounts are set up properly then they wouldnt be able to play a game with a rating above their age without another user giving permission. My kids are 9 and 6 and if applicable i need to use my passowrd to allow thme to play something. Good system imo.

AS for trading a 360, i doubt there's much point now as youd get pittance for it. Better to keep it and as said download all the GOG freebies, plus retain access to past downloaded titles etc, and just use for them or apps etc.

I would think twice about selling the 360, you don't get much for them now and I am finding I am playing it a lot more since I signed up to gold again, the free games on the 360 have been a lot better then the xbone ones in the few months I've had it.

I haven't had gold live for a few years and it's not a problem for me
you only need it if you have lots of time on your hands to play online with mates or online play is your thing
you could get him one and if it seems obvious he's not enjoying it without online play, get him gold at a later stage
