Got the Onkyo 606 with the Q Acoustics 1010i 5.1 speaker package, but replaced the fronts with the 1030i.(Bi amped)

Love the movies sound to the system, although the bass is very 'full on' (Poor neighbours!!).

The 2 channel music playback could be better. It lacks warmth and treble 'smoothness/sweetness' (classic 606 problem!!)

Anyone got any ideas in terms of improving this problem, but also keep the fantastic movie experience that the 606 gives. I have done every upgrade I can think of (except replacing the mains cables) with the onkyo 606, so looking to upgrade it.

Budget would be dependant on the sale of the 606, but I have seen a few sell for round £280 on ebay. (Mine is only 6 months old). Therefore, I guess I have a budget of around £500.

Ideas include: Denon 1909(£300), 2309(£480), Onkyo 706(£480),806(£500) (Unless the problem is an Onkyo triat). Sony 2400ES(£380), Marantz 5300(£480)

Discarded the yamaha's because they are hard to source, and I HATE the orange displays!!!

    Thanks.....

I've found a few oddities with the sound but on asking it looks like my room acoustics (brick inner walls mostly) are the root cause.

    Interesting replies so far.......

A lot of hi fi experts (from the magazines) suggest the onkyo 606 has timing issues and treble harshness when playing 2 channel stereo playback......

I find it can sound a bit muddled with complicated tracks too.....

Yet , it sounds superb with movies and 5.1.

Music and sound is all down to individual tastes, I guess.

One system may sound amazing to one person, but awful to another!!

Yeah, very true. Depends on source, speakers and I guess the music listened to as well.

Can't really help with the recommendations but wish you luck in finding some wonderful sound in your system :) Any dealers that you could go for a listen at in your area?

Went to richer Sounds in Birmingham to look at the Sony 2400ES, but do not do demo's at weekend's, so walked out.

Superfi was closed that day (Sunday).

I hear that Curry's (Yes Curry's) in Wednesbury has had refit and has a dedicated listening room, and some good hifi names for sale now.

My local two shops in town only sell Onkyo. One does do Denon, but is out of stock with most things at the moment (and has a VERY pushy saleman in there-He MUST be avoided!!!)

And to be honest, i always think it's a bit cheeky to take up their time for demo's when you have seen it cheaper online, and have no intention to buy at the shop.....:smashin:
