Taken with my new toys - Canon 350D with Canon f1.8 50mm lens. Taken in AV mode with a f/3.2 at 800 iso with 1/160s shutter speed. Photoshop work: added a frame, adjusted colour, brightness, contrast and levels, ran an unsharp mask and resized.

Bread making is one of my other hobbies and the photo is of two bread rolls I made this afternoon using the RAW materials of flour and yeast!

    Hope you like it....

That is excellent! I really like it :) completely looks like something you'd see at the end of the advert for Hovis or something :p

Cheers scharf_10, that's really nice of you to say.

Although I guess Hovis would insist on Hovis yeast being in the shot rather than the yeast of a competitor like Doves Farm!

I really like this picture. Excellent composition
A tip about unsharp mask. If you ever need to sharpen your picture, always apply unsharp mask AFTER you've altered levels AND resized. This is not in any way a comment about your picture Simon but rather the order in which you said you've done your adjustments. What I have found (and many tutorials will back me up on this) is that any sharpening you do will mostly be lost after resizing.
Simon, try giving the picture a once over with unsharp mask again using the levels Amount 100%, Radius 1.0 and Threshold 5 and let me know if you're happy with the result.

Hmm! It may be me but . . . apart from the pack of flour, the rest looks out of focus. Just my 10 cents worth :uk:

Hi, thanks for the nice comments. It is quite a complicated recipe because it uses a sourdough starter that I made which takes initially 5 days to make and I
use my breadmachine to make the dough. But I'll happily PM you the recipe if you'd like.

Thanks for the tip Bowen - I didn't know that. I will give it a try tonight and repost the shot if that improves it.

It's supposed to be like that!

I focused in on the yeast pack so that the yeast would be perfectly in focus with the flour almost in focus. The yeast is the most important RAW material used in bread baking with flour second. I wanted the bread to be out of focus but still obvious what it was as I wanted the focus to be on the RAW materials to fit in with the comp ;)

Thanks Steve. My 350D and lens did most of the work though, I just pressed the buttons in the right order and time!

Love the way the green on the flour packet works against the more muted colours surrounding it.
