Outlook 2003 won't close properly

I've been running Office 2003 with no problems on my XP machine for a few years, but now every time I close Outlook it closes the screen display but outlook.exe and winword.exe remain in the processes list in task manager. The Outlook icon also remains in the system tray.
Anyone any ideas please? I've checked for any updates and have done a repair of office.

I think I've fixed it - well it's shut down properly twice on the trot now so fingers crossed.

Bloody iTunes had added a "com add-in" to outlook and as soon as I removed that it seemed to work ok.
