Ever since I saw this, I've been wondering why he didn't just turn the ignition off. OK, he'd have lost power steering and the brake servos, but surely on the A1 the lack of power steering would have been survivable, and he could have used the handbrake. (Or just waited for it to slow down...)

What am I missing? I don't know much about automatics - would that have caused a problem?

I also felt that and losing the steering was the reason he gave, but surely that must be preferable to hurtling along at 130+ mph. I saw him interviewed though and he didn't strike me as the sharpest knife in the drawer.

what a ******. If anyone is ever in a situation like that, turn the car off. But LEAVE the keys in the ignition, that way the steering wheel won't lock. If it a real emergency stick the auto into reverse..it will eat the box but will bring you to a halt quickly.

I used to build and race drag cars in Australia ALL of which were autos, The key is to get the engine turned off so it is not making anymore power...then get the car to stop the wheels turning, with no brakes the best way is to get the mechanical forces of the gearbox acting as a brake.

The only additional thing that puzzles me is that he claims to have phoned the AA and the police - and none of them told him to turn the ignition off, either...

What an idiot, turning the engine off should have occurred to him in that amount of time surely! - I can however sympathise, as in the split second I had to make the decision when stuck at full throttle I dipped the clutch and waved bye bye to the engine rather than flicking the ignition off, I just didn't want to hit the car in front (car was on a pair of weber sidedraughts without a rev limiter :( )

If you read the article the shifter linkage / box itself was stuck in gear.

OK so his throttle linkage jams and his auto box control dies? Then he burns the brakes out and crashes........................ MUPPET

Dunno whether this is relevant, but on some push button start cars (like my Renault) you cannot turn off the engine whilst the car is moving.

Slamming on brakes = brake fade = what happened

Handbrake = car will spin out of control

I accidentally clicked the "thanks" button instaed of quote, by the way :suicide:

being on full throttle in an auto usually indicates that you where "driving like a ******" anyway. he probably cut someone up and floored it, then got his just deserts. my opinion was confirmed when i saw his picture.

This is a ridiculous story.I assume BMW brakes are not made of tinfoil and that they are capable of stopping any BMW from its maximum speed. So,your car accelarates unexpectedly. You brake and it stops. You turn off the engine, end of story.Even allowing for the fact he looked as intelligent as a slug, then when it happened a second time his brakes should still have brought him to a stop and he had a second chance to turn the engine off.How many times does he expect us to believe that he slowed the car down to burn out his brakes but never ever thought it may be sensible to call it a day.Nonsense.:thumbsdow

I suspect the brakes are designed to stop the car when no engine force is pushing it still. Braking a ton of metal, no big deal, braking a ton of metal with 100plus horses pushing it is a bit trickier i would of guessed.

But don't various mags test the 0-60 by holding the cars on their brakes at full throttle, then releasing the brakes (autos only obviously).I'm not saying the brakes will be perfect after either episode, but surely they could stop you,or even slow you significantly at least a couple of times. It's not as if your doing maximum speed before you realise something is wrong.I'm afraid this story just doesn't ring true to me,too many ways of stopping the vehicle before you opt to hit a roundabout at speed.

It would take some serious torque to overpower a normal set of disk brakes on the average saloon car. Try it next time you're on a (fairly empty I guess ;) ) motorway doing about 80.. Hold down the accelerator and press the brake.. You'll slow down. Eventually if you keep holding the brake, you'll slow to a stop and stall the engine.

But the vehicle is stopped when the power is built up and that I thought was done using the clutch.... I know it certainly is on a bike!

Hold the throttle open fully with the front brake on and its donut city :rotfl: Assuming you have the strength to hold it anyway :rotfl:
