      Hello everyone.

A little while ago , i cant remember where, I thought I saw some information on a wrath of khan 4k bluray release.

I dont think it ever happened but was wondering if we are likely to ever see the original movies in 4kUHD.

I have held on on buying the blurays as they look like they have been DNR-ed to with in an inch of their lives.

Has anyone heard any information on a potential release at all ?

Would you buy them separate or wait for a full box set?

Can you think of any new extras that you may want to accompany such a release?

No rumours yet. If there were, the trekkies would be going crazy! :)

It’s only a matter of time before they are released (might be wrong but I believe it is available in 4K on AppleTV) and you can be sure there will be a 1-10 boxset and I will pay whatever they want.

As for additional extras I expect Paramount will follow their previous UHD releases and the only extras will be on the Blu-Rays and they will be the already available discs so nothing new.

Wrath of Khan is available on Sky Q in UHD but only that one, none of the others. Thought it was a bit strange.

It’s the only one of the originals that has had a 4K transfer, the rest are very dated masters.

I ‘need’ to update my collection with these if/when they arrive as I still only have them on DVD. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for some decent remasters. Don’t care what the 4K collection will cost, I will have them on day 1.

If the Mission Impossible and Jack Ryan films are any indication the eventual 4K releases should look very nice.

Correct, it is available on ATV 4K in 4K
Of course, just the regular DD 5.1 Soundtrack, whereas the regular Blu-ray release has DD 5.1 EX - but I don't know how much of a difference that would make, as I understand that EX is basically a 6.1 format, which I imagine few people have.

Paramount is sitting on a 4K scan with HDR grade of TWOK, no idea why it's not on disc yet. Come on Paramount, take my money!!!

So any ideas as to why it wasn't released for the 50th anniversary of the show ?

Why just sit on it and not try to make any money from it?

Oh Damn, that got my ST glands salivating again!
I've been holding out on TWOK on ATV 4K until they do a special on it ($19,99 right now, but occasionally it will be a $9,99 special) as this apparently IS the version that got limited Cinema release for the 50th Anniversary. Might have to at least rent it now...Or buy anyway.....
      Will report back

All I know is that there was a limited Cinematic release - I believe they even got Shatner to do a little speech beforehand at some showings (I'm going from memory now, don't quote me!).
      Yep, & then....nothing!

The 50th Anniversary would have been the perfect time to re-release the whole lot on BD and when the steelbooks and 50th Anniversary set were announced a lot of people hoped they would finally get it right but nope they took the cheap route with repackages.

Sure it was nice to finally have the Directors Cut of Khan but it was already the best looking disc of the lot anyway, wasted opportunity however I really hope Star Trek 4 gets made as they love to cash in on the theatrical releases by putting out new product and that would be the perfect time for a UHD set same as this year they put out Mission Impossible 1-5 to cash in on Fallout and the Jack Ryan collection to cash in on the new series.

Could be I don't know, the original BD release from 2009 also had a 4K scan so could be either of them, the colour timing should be a dead give away though.

Khan & Undiscovered Country (for Japan) both got Meyer approved 4K scans back in 2016 but as the 3 Kelvin Trek Movies sold poorly on 4K they were never released.

Paramount have been turning a lot of attention to their back catalog since they got new management so hopefully before long we will get these released although 4 might be a big problem they need to go back to the print master on that one the last BD scan was awful even after Lowry Digital were asked to fix it!

4 and 6 are the worst looking of the original films on Blu-ray, the sad thing is that the underlying transfers used for the BDs aren't that bad it was the digital manipulation they applied that ruined them.

Untouched shots from all the films were included in the extras and they were far better than what was presented on the Blu-rays but of course these were released bang smack in the 'people don't want grain they want scrubbed clean images' period that ruined other films like Predator and Patton so ever since whenever Paramount re-released them we fans held out hope they had finally given them the presentation they deserve but nearly a decade later and nothing :(

BD is waxy grainy DNRed to pieces simply horrible in many places. Lowry Digital listed it as an Emergency Restoration on their website when it existed so who knows how bad it was before they worked on it! I suspect the emergency restoration part was trying to make the low res interlaced master look more like a BD than go back to the film negative for a new scan! Paramount seem to have issues with some films in obtaining the masters it seems. Also the best version is the European only R2 DVD with the original prologue (which had some great directional sound FX added to the ST3 footage). That version was only ever released on DVD outside North America I believe as it was created to expand the theatrical audience outside US as back in the day these Trek movies did poorly outside of North America, UK, Germany & Brazil.

I may have to rent the 4K iTunes version to see how that is - unless anyone here has already done that & knows the quality?
Right now, rental is $3,99 versus $19,99 Purchase
Never bought the BD, but seem to remember that I did rent it & it was BAD!
Frustrating, as this is my personal favourite of all the Original ST Movies.

The Blu-ray of Wrath of Khan has always been great (it was the only one to get a new 4K restoration back in 2009) with the DC release from 2016 even better due to them fixing the colour.

Yes the non directors cut bluray always looked a little too blue in places.

It's a shame the Star Trek movies never get the proper treatment they deserved.
Instead of individual releases they should have 2 collection box sets. One for TOS movies and another for TNG movies, both should have 4K scans, theatrical and director cuts.
Allow Shanter a chance to do a Director's cut of Star Trek V.
All bonus material from the original DVD special editions, new bonus material.
Original cinema posters for the case covers.

I'm assuming we won't see the Motion Picture Directors Edition in 4K? As the effects would need to be done again?

Unless they re-render or splice in 480p footage I think the DC will forever be DVD only.
