I've got 200 dvd's now and I'm kinda losing track of what I've got so I thought I'd organise them a bit better. I

How do you organise yours or dont you bother. I was gonna put them in alphabetical order but I dunno now.

And yeh I know its sad  But I cant be the only one.

    TV stuff first, then movies.

TV stuff by: Genre>(Chronological if required)>Alphabetical

Movies: Alphabetical, unless 'part' of a TV series. For example, 'X-Files - Fight the Future' nestles twixt series 5 and 6 of the TV series.

Not the best piccy in the world (it's from a 'phone)

Built it myself - it's shelving rather than a bookcase per se. Each of the 10 shelves holds the equivalent of just under 100 single DVDs.

The bedroom where my HT set-up is has an alcove intended for a built-in wardrobe. Naturally I found a better use for it!

MrsC wouldn't allow the HT anywhere near the lounge :(

I'm torn between alphabetical & genre.

Alphabetical fine if I know what I'm looking for but for browsing for something then genre would be better.

Or i could just put'em back as they were!

The problem is when one has 'cross-genre' movies, or those that could be one of several. It could get to the stage of having a seperate genre for every movie made!

I just put mine in alphabetical order using this software to record everything. It can even pull up IMDB information.

Don't know mate, not tried it. The guy that writes the software does updates quite regularly though, so it is always evolving.

I had an Access database that I used to organize my videotape collection. I'd then just store them by index number, and I could use the database to search through genres, actors, ratings, etc. I'd bring up the number, and then head to the appropriate shelf. (or box)

Although I've got my DVDs in the same database, I don't have enough yet to worry about an order. I just ram them in the shelf any old way. (although the ones with odd cases are all together)

After much ****ing about, mine are filed thus:

    Dirty Movies: A-Z
Music: A-Z (Bands, concerts, etc - not musical movies)
Live/Theatre: A-Z (mainly stand up comedy, etc)
    TV: A-Z

    Movies is where I sub-divide:-

World Cinema: A-Z by director (Rule of thumb is if I have 5 or more movies by a particular director s/he goes into the directors A-Z).

    World Cinema: A-Z by title

    Then English speaking Cinema:-

I avoid genres as there is too much cross-fertilization. However if I have 5 or more of clearly categorizable movies they get their own section, such as:-

    007
    Musicals
    Disney
    Ealing Comedy
    Hammer Films
Universal Classic Horror (all the old Karloff/Lugosi/Chaney Universal classics)

    Then:-

Movies: A-Z by Director (same 5 or more rule as above)
    Movies: A-Z by title

Starting to accumulate a substantial amount of documentary cinema, so they're probably going to have their own section too.

Probably sounds terribly anal, but with a collection the size of mine it's fairly essential. Like Confucious I found it most ergonomical and economical to build my own units to hold the collection. Currently scratching my head as to where I can put the next one though...

Alphabetical all the way, but do not go by 'the' ie 'The Crow' is under C.

Apart from my boxsets, where one shelf is multiple films, and teh other is single films in bigger boxes!

trust a woman to say that  *ducks for a male chauvinistic comment!*

To be honest my collection is nearing 200 and I know pretty much what I have from the top of my head so i've got them in any order...but i'm getting proper shelving soon so I'm considering doing it by director like one poster has already said...or failing that by the colour of the spine ;)

Does that mean we should only buy DVDs that have covers to match our wallpaper, curtains etc? ;)

I tried DVDProfiler and Movietrack, the latter is nice, but profiler is streets ahead! And the free version offers so much (for instance, automatically gives details of easter eggs) - the software company have missed a trick by offering only minimal advantages from the full version (like hi-res images) - shhh, don't tell 'em

Also, someone I know has his collection shelved by studio / publisher, so the spines match each other - a case of OCD?

Whoops, I see Lex does this too!

OH - and I read about this barcode scanner - just £8.75 inc delivery ordered from US:

    http://mavin.com/computermice.html

(I chose small Global envelope, 6 days delivery, so total cost under $18, shouldn't incur duty, they accept Paypal with no extra fee)

If it works it will be great (esp as the cheapest on Maplin is £69).

I don’t have that many disc but I have one shelf for TV programs and one for films both on alphabetic order apart from some Bond film which I file under B to try to match the case spines.
