Optimal HDMI settings?

This is my TV if it helps. I bought it on Black Friday....
Amazon.com: LG 32LE5300 32-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED LCD HDTV, Black: Electronics

Anyways, I was just wondering what the optimal HDMI settings (Display resolution, reference levels, and color space) are since I seem to be getting a bit of lag which is ruining my FPS experience. Im on the verge of returning this TV to Amazon unless I can find a solution.
I'm a complete noob when it comes to HDTVs so any help would be greatly appreciated. And yes, the TV is set to "gaming" and I even bought a 50 dollar HDMI cable out of desperation even though I know they are all the same.

Also, I read somewhere that setting the display resolution to 1080P will cause the TV to upscale which in turn causes lag. Is this true?
