I have read that the PS3 has an optical audio out port. To get sound to my amp (stereo) do I need to purchase:

    1. an optical cable (do they come with one already?)
    2. an optical to phono (2 channel red/white) adaptor?

    Thanks

you'll be wanting an optical cable and there isn't one in the packaging. Your amp will obviously need to also have an optical input. Why did you put (Stereo) in brackets? What amp do you have?

That depends on whether your amp has an optical in or 2x phono in.

My amp is a Teac AH-500, Im not sure it has optical input, will have to look, but its essentially a music amp.

Is it just as effective to run the red and white phono's direct from the TV to amp or would this give a lower quality than going direct from the PS3?

Why don't you just use the cable that came in the PS3 box for stereo? Thats how I have it...

Its the normal playstation connector to yellow, red, white phono connectors.
You can set the PS3 to output the sound on that and the picture over HDMI (which is exactly how I have mine setup as I use a stereo amp).

Excellent that answers my question :smashin: This way when streaming music to the amp the sound will be spot on. For films it wont be surround but it will be decent.

I guess it just leaves a yellow cable unconnected?
