If you have sky, you need to connect it direct via optical as sky only outputs stereo over its video connections. Set it to DOLBY D in the sound settings menu.

would the optical work ok if i use an hd-mi from the sky box and one from the dvd into the tv, then take the optical from the tv to the surround, does the optical allow the output to split to all 5 speaker

No, if you want 5.1 from sky, you need to connect direct via optical, which is what I said in my previous post.

Buy a 3 way optical switch and another optical cable. Get the shortest possible, quality optical cables and avoid unbranded ebay tat and you should be fine. Some people have success with an optical splitter which are meant to be used the other way around i.e. splitting one device to two displays but will work the other way around providing the cables are short and only one device is active/on at any one time. I would just go for the switch. The likes of audiovisualonline sell them.

Your DVD player and Sky box will connect to the switch via optical cable and a further optical cable will run from the output of the switch to the single optical input.
