optical cable help

Hi,

[i'm very very new to all this Blu-Ray stuff]

at the moment i'm using a Panasonic DTS compatible DVD player linked optically to a Sony DTS-ES 7.1 surround amp, which for the moment is great, but, i'm planning to get a Blu-Ray player and i was wondering if i would get all the sound modes through the optical cable? like Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD. or would i have to buy a new amp which has HDMI input/output?

any help would be great :)

You will need a new amp to get all the codecs HOWEVER some players do a DTS re encode which allows the ones you can't decoded to be transfered to full bit rate DTS which your receiver can decode. This is typically 2x the data rate of DTS DVD and sounds great, for very little extra outlay. DD is also at bit rates MUCH higher than DVDs so also sounds much better. The difference is significant.

so its not possible to get a HDMI splitter for audio and visuals then?

okay I understand, no the rate limiting step is the bandwidth of the TOSLINK optical cable. It can cope with straight DD and core DTS but nothing else from a Blu ray disc for multichannel, hence a different interface is needed. HDMI. This does True HD (can't think of any DD+ on Blu, it was a red thing) and DTS HD (MA) as multichannel codecs and multichannel PCM.

Or get a Blu-Ray player with built in HD audio decoding and connect it to the amp with phonos?

You can get a Denon 3800BD for £599 at the moment. This would tick all the boxes apart from BDlive.
