hey, i think this is the right place to ask, i'm new to the forums.

i just recently bought a sony 5.1 surround sound from my brother. the main reason i wanted it was to play my xbox 360 in 5.1. my brother didn't have an optical cable so i decided to go out and buy one cheap (£3). When i got home i discoverd that my 5.1 system didn't have a optical slot so i couldn't connect my 360.

I am just wondering what cable i would need to connect my 360 if my 5.1 system doesn't have an optical slot.

    thanks.

Guessing that your 5.1 system does have coaxial digital in you can get an optical to coaxial adaptor, something like this

It should be labelled as something like Coaxial In or Digital In or Aux In (Digital). It will use a phono connector.

Can you tell us the make / model of the system? that would help

    regards

I'm afraid the specs for that system suggest it doesn't have a digital input. It will only give you 5.1 from DVDs.

You could connect the X-Box to the stereo input but it won't be 5.1.

no, that's for an aerial for the radio tuner. just to the left of your photo looks like where the stereo input will be

I had the Sony DAV SB100 it was the DVD player I had for years which I just this year replaced it with AV separates.

It does not have Coaxial or Optical inputs. It only has Red/White Phono. This does not give 5.1 sound. Plus when I connected my PS2 via the R/W RCA method to the SB100 the sound was very duff indeed.

It was good for watching movies but once I have now tried a separate AV receiver and speakers I would never go back as the sound from these is literally out of this world compared to the SB100.

Could you not sell it on ebay as it was low grade, i.e cheapest there was, when I bought it way back in 2004 (it was all I could afford at the time). I would suspect it would easily be outclassed, and by some margin, by any 'all in ones' released now.

Yes, if you read the whole thread we've resorted to analogue as the only possible option and the OP knows that it will not be 5.1

Hello Ninjack, This is your brother, thought i would find you asking in these forums, We'll to be perfectly honest i don't know how i got 5.1 out of these speakers, I think your best bet is to either:

    A) Look for a cheap AV Receiver and use the speakers that i sold to you (for a very reasonable price)

    B) Look for a cable that goes from optical to LR Phono, Then the sound from you Xbox would come out of the speakers but i think only the Front 3 speakers and Sub, and since i guess you'll be wearing your headset i don't think you'll need to worry much about sound coming from behind you. besides your still be able to watch DVD's in 5.1
