I know i'm not the only one who was in the situation, had bought a Xbox 360 pro and wanted to use their own HDMI cable for video and Optical for audio. Whilst fiddling around modifying cables to get this setup i tried calling the xbox helpline to no avail, however my last called gleamed a vital piece of info, the xbox repair centre's direct e-mail! E-mailed them with my problem and the next day i got a phone call to clarify it was the "HDMI audio adapter" (their name for the dongle) that i needed. I was told one would be shipped out free of charge as i was under warranty, and was even given a reference number should anything go wrong. I thought no more would come of it until this morning the adapter popped through my door!

So for all of you looking for HDMI video and optical sound, send them an e-mail to this adress: [email protected]
It's got to be worth a try, could save yourself a lot of time and money!

    Here's the exact e-mail i sent them:

"I was instructed after a recent call to xbox customer services (reference:XXXXXXXXXX) to contact yourselves as you may be able to help me with my problem.
I'm trying to track down one of the optical adapters that are bundled with the xbox elite systems, as shown here:

    http://farm1.static.flickr.com/229/477790792_ccfd8f614c.jpg

Is it possible to source one of these adapters from yourselves? The part number is X808221-001. As far as I've seen they are unavailable in shops or on-line, either via the official site or retailers. Being the owner of a recently purchased xbox 360 pro system I am unwilling to purchase a whole new console for a small adapter! Thank you for any help you can provide in this matter.
    "

    Hope that helps!

You shouldn't need a dongle just to get stereo sound from your TV, the dongle is for 5.1 sysytems.

I have a dongle that connects to my amp via an optical Toslink cable but if the amp is off I still get stereo sound via HDMI only.

Cheeky! Gutted I paid £30 for it now, they're sold as an "HDMI Cable Kit" complete with an MS branded HDMI cable in the likes of GAME & Gamestation.

Just incase they cotton onto the fact that they're sending these out like mad when they get flooded with emails for them:)

I phoned MS and said that HDMI cable was faulty, they sent me one for free.

So this means you can get a 25 pound set of accessories for free :)

Haven't got a Samsung TV (although my wife's folks have one, and my Dad is buying one next week), but just had a thought that maybe you have to enable it in the Setup menu on the TV. Dunno though, I didn't have to with my AOC or Hanspree, but it's worth a look.

Thanks for this post, I have emailed them and will see what response I get. Been wondering about this for a couple of weeks as I had to take my old 360 Premium back when I got the RROD, and I got it exchanged for a Pro with HDMI. Was really happy about the HDMI until I found out about this problem.

Really hoping I can get the adaptor off them even if I had to pay a few quid or something I wouldn't mind... but there's no way I'm spending £30 on one!

    Nice one mate:smashin:

Just wondering, can you disable the audio going through HDMI when using optical? i.e. like the PS3. Rather have the audio coming out of the amp only.

Yeah, that seems to be the only way to do it. A little low-tech, but doesnt bother me as the only thing i need the TV speakers for is watching broadcast TV, everything else goes through the surround speakers.

I would never have thought of that!:D

Anyway, guess I'll just have to turn the volume down on the tv. Muting the tv leaves a mute icon onscreen all the time so thats not an option.

    Cheers anyway!

Just had a call from Microsoft Customer Support in regard to an email that i had sent off late last week requesting information on a HDMI Audio Dongle. He asked if i still required it and i said 'yes' at which point he said that he would send one out free of charge.:D
Thankyou to the original poster for the email address as well as the wording used in your correspondence.

    ^^^

That's good news, well done :) I sent my email Friday so hopefully will get a similar call, be nice. Thanks again OP

UPDATE: Don't you just love good timing? Just had the same call from XBOX CS confirming they'd received my email and will be sending me an audio adapter free of charge as "these aren't available in the shops yet" (?)

Regardless this, coupled with the free XBLA game we're getting from tomorrow, Pioneer XBOX Surround System for only £49.50 and recent arrival of a brand new MS Steering Wheel to replace the previous 'faulty' one, has me feeling all warm and fuzzy towards MS for a change - let's hope it lasts .....

    Asked me if i'd written the e-mail myself.......couldn't lie...said i had:D

    Top marks to microsoft support:thumbsup:

Also had to send e-mail to register 360 with them!

    This is flawed.

If you switch the input on your plasma to another input ( ie watch SKY) your 360 will reset. There is a 'hack' for this as well which involves de-soldering pins in the adaptor. This hack is detailed in the link I've given above as well. To be honest I'm a little 'hacked' out, the original hack bends the main input port on the 360 so will eventually cause a problem (maybe a long time).

I've bitten the bullet and bought a optical dongle instead. Ontop of this I've also just emailed the email in the original post although I don't really expect anything to come of it.

That is what I'm also afraid of. Even with the hack its still a tight squeeze. Fingers crossed that I get a call about a free dongle!

Good to hear those of you that are e-mailing are having luck getting the adapters sent out. Glad i could be of some help! If they're asking whther people are writing the e-mails themselves it might be worth re-wording it for the time being, before they change their policy regarding sending these things out for free.

Did any of you good people who got calls this week from MS CS about getting a free adapter sent out actually receive it yet? I was called Tuesday afternoon, so far no sign of it.

Not panicking yet; noted details of my call and the guy read my address back to me but was hoping it would be here by the weekend....

Emailed support a few days ago as suggested by a previous posts. Just received a phone call from them saying that they don't have any of the adapters. Then I asked if they knew of anywhere that I might be able to obtain one. Their response? Ebay! Great customer service.
