    Hi all,

I'm thinking of upgrading my Yamaha RX-V657 amp over the coming months and think i've got it down to one of two.

The Yamaha RX-V465 and the Onkyo TX-SR507.

What are people opinions on these two any pro's & con's on them etc??? On pure looks i think i prefer the Yamaha but i'm more interested on performance etc.

    Cheers

    Dave.

Their is a big thread on the Onkyo SR507 which has some good info on it.

Their is a forum member called, Dante01 who has a very good opinion of amps / speakers who doesn't appear to be online tonight as I sent him a PM and he hasn't got back to me yet.

He will hopefully read this and give you are more detailed write up:D

I have just bought a Yamaha 465 and the sound is awesome:thumbsup:

It is a nice looking amp and doesn't dissapoint in terms of Movies / music.

I can't comment on the Onkyo although the thread on the 507 will give you some good feedback from owners and potential buyers etc.

I had a brief look and it gets good and bad really.

If it was me I would go for the yamaha as it is well respected and for a budget amp it is excellent.

By rights the Yamaha should be the better sounding of the two, especially with music, but the build quality of the Onkyo appears to be better than the Yamaha.

I think I'd go for the Yamaha, but I'd want to listen to both before making a final decision.

dante01 sent you a PM earlier.

Got someone asking me about amps. He wants to know the best amp in the £300 bracket at richer sounds?

He is running the same speakers as me, tannoy sfx!

It will mainly used for movies / occasional music on sky etc.

Basically best build and sounding amp / using tannoy speakers too:)

Cheers guys...... I'm gonna have a demo room booked at my local RS to test the pair of them out before making a purchase.... They also have the same speakers as myself available for the test so should be pretty spot on.

I think it's gonna be a case of waiting till the demo and having a play with both etc... It'll be mainly used for TV/Movies.... with the odd bit of music every now and then and will be connected to the MS Alumni speaker package.

I had seen reviews of both but both had a similar amount of good and bad press hence me asking on here.

    Cheers

    Dave.

I'd persinally say that either the Sony STRDH800 or STRDG820 would be a good match for the Tannoy speakers. The Onkyo should also be acceptable, but I'd rate the Yamaha as being the better sounding amp. I don't think the Onkyo offers the Yamaha much competition when it comes to sound and I think the Sony beats it for both price and features. Both the Onkyo 507 and Sony receivers have slightly better build quality in comparison the Yamaha 465, but the Onkyo is ugly :D

Although I think the Tannoy speakers better suited to the Sony amps, I'd still rather have the Yamaha 465 if sound quality is more important than 7.1.

Again, your friend should try to arrange an audition in order to listen for himself before purchasing ;)

    Thanks.

He is going to go and have a listen this weekend.

He was impressed with my yamaha 465 but he has seems to want 7.1.

He doesn't really rate the spring clips on the yamaha but I have told him that he will not find any difference really even if they were all binding posts.

But you can only advise someone so much. lol:D

My friend has now bought the Yamaha RX-V765.

It sounds awesome withe the tannoy SFX speakers, i'm jealous now as it sounds even better than my 465:(

It has the new, Digital ToP-ART and High Current, so expected to I guess.
