I've just had an Aldi mailshot through the door. DVD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3 compatible, dolby digital decoder and am/fm tuner 5/1 speaker system. At this price I've got to try it.

I saw a picture of it in the flyer and it looks very much like a Compacks DVD5000 with a basic bundled amplified speaker package added to it. No mention of progressive scan though and obviously its got extra features like the radio but the case is the same and display so its probably got a lot of shared components.

It probably won't be upto much sound quality wise.

My dad asked me if he should get one of these as he's desperate to get into DVD and 5.1 after I gave him a demo of Hero in DTS. :D
When it comes down to it you can't really go wrong for £90 all in.

Are you sure it's an amplified speaker package? My mate has one of those Pacific supermarket all-in-one jobs and the amplification/decoding is built into the player. PQ shouldn't be too much of a concern as it will be connected composite anyway (although i see it has s-video out and should do RGB through scart) and the sound's bound to be better than the TV can manage.

It might even surprise me and have a lightening quick layer change, the cheapies seem to either be incredibly quick or (in the case of the Pacific) amazingly slow.

Anyway you look at it, it will be light years ahead of watching a pan and scan VHS copy of your favourite film in stereo!

These systems are in Aldi this Thursday (25th Sept). I was in Sainsburys earlier (monday) and they've got a Mico T120 or something 5:1 for £99. I know one of the "What...." mags has rated one of their dvd players very well in the past. Just bought a sony 28fx68 so the missus said I have to wait, even at that price !!!

Yeah its probably not an amplified speaker package although a lot of the cheap ones are but looking at the picture the subwoofer doesn't appear to have any volume controls so it should be alright. Its only 15 watts per channel though and as you wouldn't normally drive such a cheap system at near full volume it may struggle to give enough volume out without reaching maximum or distorting.

I looked at the ad again and notice the dvd player has the word amplifier on it, so it's onboard amplification not active speakers.

I may suggest my dad look at the Mico deal as well

Does anyone have a multi-region hack for this? Quality's not bad apparently.
