    Hi there,

    As the topic title says...

I'm trying to choose between the Onkyo 605 or the Marantz SR7001 for my AV amp. I can get them both for the same price at £149.

    any opinions???

Does no one have any opinions??

I'm leaning towards the Oknyo as I've read reviews and the Marantz isn't renowned for it's quality, although it does have more features...

    I'd really appreciate an opinion.

    Thanks.

Where did you read that Marantz were not renowned for their quality?

The SR7001 is a great receiver, and will sound better than the Onkyo. But, The onkyo supports all the HD codecs, the SR7001 only accepts HD audio over LPCM so your player will have to do the decoding.

If you want your receiver to decode the HD audio then you have to get the Onkyo. On the other hand if you listen to a lot of music I think you will be happier with the Marantz.

I'm sure I saw it somehwere whilst googling for the SR7001. There's not much out there about the Marantz.

I{ think as far as future proofing goes the Onkyo will be the better buy, but the Marantz has more features.

But the Marantz is in Silver and I prefer the black of the Onkyo.

    Decisions decisions.

I can see me getting both at this rate :D

Well actually, If I was buying between the two it would be the Marantz Sr7001 without any hesitation.

    Cheers for your help.

I can see me getting both and then using one in each of my rooms! A bit overkill, but for that price it's hard to say no!

Agreed the Marantz would be my choice.

In actual fact if it helps, HD decoding onboard an amplifier is technically a dead end anyway. The newer Profiles for Bluray players specify decoding on the player to allow special features and sound mixing. So having decoders on the amp is more for backwards compatibility with older players that don't decode themselves. Any future players released should be able to decode the formats and output as LPCM if they way to conform to either profile 1.1 or 2.0

Having said that please do try and audition them both and make up your own mind. Personally the sound quality is the top priority for me. Features are pointless if it sounds crap so a listen to see which you prefer is essential.

Edit: just seen your reply. If you can afford both, why not just increase your budget and get one much better amp. (although 149 for the Marantz does sound good)

I was also looking at these amps but couldn't get to the store, if you bought both to try them out i'd be willing to buy whichever one you don't want for the price +p&p. thanks
