My standard answer to a "vs" question is whichever one that sounds best to you:)

I am just curious, you currently have a Denon 2805, are you looking at the Onkyo or Sony as an upgrade? Somehow I think it may possibly be a "downgrade":D

No not to upgrade more of a side step as I'm buying a PS3 and need an amp with HDMI through pass to get lossless audio via HDMI as current digital cable can't support the data rate of DD plus or DD true high def sound

    Thanks

Well the answer would have to be the Onkyo, as the Sony 1200ES won't process audio over HDMI, which is what your looking for from your PS3. You'd have to up to the Sony 3200ES to get this feature.

You seem to be quite keen on Denon kit from your current setup, might be worth looking at the Denon 2307 as that can handle PCM over HDMI from your PS3.

    Thanks
I do like the look of the Denon but it will push my budget abit and becides I only want a new amp as a 6 month stopgap until the new HDMI V1.3 recievers come out. I was also looking at the Onkyo 604E as a cheaper alternative to the 674, does this support PCM audio over the HDMI input?

    Cheers

Yes it does, but both this and the 674 only support 5.1 over HDMI, if you want 7.1 you have to use other connections (multichannel phonos etc).

    Nigel,
In my opinion the Onkyo is the best choice for your questions and at the present sponsors price gives unbeatable technology for the money being asked. The Receiver also has Audyssey 2EQ built in and whilst it is not as advanced in processing terms as the bigger amplifiers out there, at larger outlays, this EQ is certainly the most accurate I have had experience with. Although I haven't tried the 2EQ variety my experiences with MultiEQ gives me confidence that it will do the job far better than the Sony. The Onkyo's spec at that price is in my opinion a bargain. The Denon mentioned has similar spec's but as you stated is more expensive when compared with the Onkyo at the offer price.
