Onkyo TX-NR609 hdmi output to VGA

I have an ancient BENQ projector (PB2120) which I'd like to connect to my Onkyo HDMI output. The projector does not have a HDMI input. If I buy a HDMI to VGA cable would this work? It is the only way I can think of to get the menu's displayed (and reasonable-ish quality) without connecting to a TV which would have to be 'borrowed' from my lounge.

thank you

No such thing as a HDMI to VGA cable.
HDMI = digital. VGA = analogue.
HDMI to VGA converter = ££££££££££££

What about using component connections?

Though I don't think menus would work but you would get an image.

I think my confusion comes from the fact that Amazon sell an HDMI to SVGA cable
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HDMI-Male-S...24P4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1323167700&sr=8-3

However looking at the tech specs it says

Technical Details

* This cable connect HDMI Male to VGA HD-15 Male with connecting Digital Video and Digital Audio in one
*

* *****NOTE: Your Video card must support digital signal output through VGA port function.****---- *****PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE BUYING THIS CABLE TO CONNECT FROM YOUR COMPUTER TO HDMI TV, YOU WILL NEED A CONVERTER (NOT INCLUDED)**************

So I guess it's look at a converter or a new TV for my little 'cinema/ music' room.

thanks for your help.
