At a press conference ( http://www.e-gear.com/story/story.b...onkyo&category=None&section=Unknown&swd=onkyo ) yesterday, held at it’s New Jersey headquarters, Onkyo seemed to back track a bit from it’s plans to sell an HD DVD player in 2007. Keith Haas, director of sales, said the company is “looking at both [the HD DVD and Blu-ray] formats” and rethinking it’s decision of which format to back, even possibly a dual-format unit. If there is an introduction, look for it “in the fourth quarter.”

Back at January’s CES show, Onkyo announced plans to sell and HD DVD player, rather than the rival Blu-ray format.

So far the best thing about this format war is all the fodder it give me to write about.

Hi peterweg

This was pointed out by BadAss in the main sticky [-]argument[/-] debate thread. :)

Whether or not it was debated is another question!!

An Onkyo dual format player would do for me. :)

IMO it's highly unlikely they will 'back out' of HD DVD.

If they are evaluating Blu-ray it's more than likely because they are thinking about a combo player (as LG & Samsung have done).

Funny though, it contradicts with this story (from Onkyo USA) from 3 days ago stating they are on-track with their first HD DVD player this year...

In other product developments, Onkyo USA unveiled one new Onkyo-brand DVD player and three Onkyo-brand HTiBs, said it is reevaluating its Onkyo-brand DVD strategy, and is on track to offer its first HD DVD player later this year. It will carry the Onkyo brand name.

The company has “no major changes planned” in the Onkyo brand’s retail-oriented distribution strategy, Wasek added.

Based on the above, this thread could just as easily be titled, Onkyo may never produce BD player.

Personally I hope that they go dual format. The larger the base that can play both formats, the sooner we'll see one drop away. The buyers will go with the cheapest discs and both sides will have to be competitive if they want to stay around, which can only be good for all of us.

Just another internet rumour/biased misreporting call it what you want. Already been posted, total Tosh, forgive the pun. A bit of careful research will tell you Onkyo's leanings, nothing to do with the format war.

Only problem with this statement is that it's what the editor said, not what Onkyo said. The only Onkyo quotes are:“looking at both [the HD DVD and Blu-ray] formats” and “in the fourth quarter.” We need the rest of the original Onkyo statement in order to draw informed conclusions. Otherwise -- it's speculation again!

They can stick onto whatever formats they like but in the end pricing plays a pivotal role. Even after being in HD era for 2-3 years if the manufacturers are going to price the players high with operational quirks it's going to affect the progress of the format and it's mass market penetration on long runs.

I was told by an Onkyo insider months ago that they support both formats. He was saying at the time that it could be a release of two seperate players or a combo player.

Agreed. Dual formats sound like a great idea but more expensive and less able that two stand alone's is pointless. Its not the studio's who are paying for having two formats its the customers and smaller companies.

Well, not necessarily less able, but certainly more expensive. My sources say the 1st is HD-DVD, but dual format is not out of the picture, and very much in line with what Onkyo have previously done. They do still sell possibly the world's best DVD player, which also happens to be a classy audio player for DVD-A, SACD and CD, and will read and play non-PCM audio tracks as well. So it would be no surprise to find them working on another 'universal disc player'.
