Originally they were 1600 quid new but I believe some dealers are discounting them to a grand or so for a new one. 700 quid will also get you a new Toshiba SD900 which is effectively the same player but without THX Ultra certification and the dual Component Outputs etc.

Tosh is excellent, got one myself. It's original price was around 1300 quid. www.leconcepts.com have them for 699 quid. By all accounts the Onkyo edges the Tosh out on CD playback and DVD Audio, apart from that they are effectively the same (according to different reviews I've read).

£700 is a good price for the Onkyo 939. Compared to the Tosh, although they are based on the same chassis I found the Onkyo gave a better all round performance, especially cd playback, and slightly better picture wise. Build quality is second to none and it weighs a ton, looks beautiful in silver also. After many home demos with all the competition i decided on the Onkyo.

1 Does it have any problems playing non R1 discs? I have heard rumours for example that it isn't happy playing R1 Spiderman.

Socondly I can buy it for £1,000 from my local Sevenoaks, seem expensive compared to your £700.

THX, in your experience what are it's disadvantages?

No disadvantages I have found, mine gets used weekly for DVD reviews and I throw discs from all over the globe at it without a problem, it may depend on who does the Multi hack, or if it is a shipped region free version.

I bought mine from 7Oaks Newcastle, and they were prepared to negotiate over the price. Have seen it advertised in HCC at 7oaks for £999. If any have an ex-demo model, you should be able to get even more off.
