Sorry asked something similar before, but I'm off into town and I can't pick up a 605 for £300 or order a 606 for monday.

My setup is a room 22 x 14 ft, Acoustic Energy Aego T 5.1 & a Panasonic PX80, Xbox 360 streaming HD movies over component, dvd over hdmi & in the near future a Blu-Ray player.

So do I need to spend the extra £100? will I be missing out on much, my head says get the 606 but my pocket is screaming get the 605!

Help me decide :lease:

Richer sounds are doing it for £299 mate, I was pretty much going to buy it there and then, but without any real pressure they knocked £20 off, not a great amount granted, but it didn't feel quite as bad as spending £400 :rotfl: for some reason the misses disagrees

Mine arrives of Monday:clap:

can the 605 do upscaling via component/svideo/composite to output as HDMI, the same as the 606 ? Is the main difference between the two just an extra HDMI on the 606 ?

Taken from What Hi-Fi forum

606 extras over 605:
- 4 HDMI inputs
- An extra component video input
- Video scaler, capable of 720p/1080i output
- Audyssey Dynamics EQ*
- 10W more power all round
- New remote
- HDMI CEC system now compatible with Panasonic's Viera Link, Toshiba's Regza Link and Sharp's Aquos Link, allowing the receiver to give one-button control of suitable TVs from those brands

* Audyssey Dynamics EQ works in conjunction with the Audyssey 2EQ system to adjust the balance of the sound to compensate for changing volume levels, giving a more consistent sound when listening at low volumes.

thanks for that. Looks like the 606 is the one for me than, as it needs to switch/upscale component inputs to the HDMI as well. Nothing else on the market or about to be that I should be aware of (with 4 hdmis ) ?

Er... The 605 scales video to 720p/1080i as far as I am aware! It also has Audessy EQ built in.

The other parts are correct however :)

no, the 605 scaler is limited to 720p and it doesnt have audyssey dynamic EQ. dynamic EQ is a loudness correction technology. none of the sr-xx5's have it.

i bet its not really 10w/channel more powerful either

I thought the new Sony 920 will also upscale and have 4 HDMI inputs, this will be priced at around £300, this is what I am waiting for at present.

just reading through the pdf manual on the 606.

Basically I've got the following devices which I want to connected to the 606 as follows

Sky HD - HDMI
DVD - HDMI
PS3 - HDMI
PC - HDMI
Wii - Component
360 - Component

on page 43/44 of the manual it talks about allocating inputs to the input selectors on the front panel - the only way it appears of accessing the video inputs.

Firstly, even though Aux, Tape, CD input selectors are really for audio, can you assign a Video/audio connection to them. i.e if I pressed the Aux input selector, it would select the Wii on component 1 and it's audio (into the GAME phonos) ?

It also states about the scanning for audio signals (automatic audio input selection), however if I select the Wii, I want it to use the phonos put into the game inputs, and if I select 360, I want it to look at the optical 1. It appears you can specify either hdmi, coax/opt and analog, but not a specific input. What if two devices plugged into the analogue audio are on, can you specify which one to use ?

cheers

I'm in the same boat.......a real sucker for needing to buy the latest gadget on offer but I'm having a hard time justifying the extra £100

606 extras over 605:
- 4 HDMI inputs
- An extra component video input
- Video scaler, capable of 720p/1080i output

I only need 2 HDMI connections and no components. I also don't need scaling to 1080i. Looking at the specs they both state 140w per channel??? I very much doubt a sub £1,000 amp can produce 140w per channel but they are the same anyway.

Not bothered about the remote so long as it works without any bugs

I guess it all comes down to the Audyssey Dynamics EQ

I can find the 605 for £295 but it's in silver (really wanted black) or the 606 for £399 in black or silver

I am tempted to go for the 605 and pair it with the KEF 2005.2 package as I've seen that for £399

HELP!!

p.s. The 605/606 can do Uncompressed PCM from the PS3 can't it?

if you dont need the hdmi, then go with the 605. however if you then do need an extra port, you're stuffed lol

yep, both can handle uncompressed pcm:)

Thanks, can you recommend a good 5.1 sub/sat package.

I was thinking about the 2005.2s, I had them a few months ago but wasn't THAT impressed. I think that had more to do with the lightweight amp I had at the time more than anything

Will the 605/606 be a good match for the KEFs?

Can anyone definately confirm that the 606 can output a component-in signal to HDMI output in order to save cables?
Mate of mine picked one up today and he cant get his xbox via component in to output over the HDMI...

Thanks guys, my mate is a bit of an AV noob and rang me in a flap cos I'd recommended the Onkyo based on the spec. Guess I better make a trip over some time and figure it out for him ;)

I've just been in to town with the intention of buying the 606 but then saw an ex-demo 605 for £250!

My question is, for anyone who had upgraded from the 605 to the 606, what is the 606 like for music (ie from cd) versus the 605?

I went to two specialist hi-fi retailers; the first (who had the £250 ex-dem) said that although he hadn't compared the two side by side, thought they were pretty much the same except for the extra inputs (which would be useful but not essential RIGHT NOW) and the video upscaling (which I don't need assuming I'll use the PS3's upscaler).

The 2nd retailer said, without prompting, that the 606 was much better musically than the 605 and that in his opinion was the biggest improvement (apart from the obvious extra 2 hdmi inputs).

If anyone can vouch for the 606 with CD's versus the 605, then I'll go for that, otherwise I can't say no to saving £150!

cheers

Just picked up my 606 this afternoon after selling the 605 to a friend and in one word WOW.... what a difference musically the amp is so much better, thats definately down to the new audyssey EQ, the extra watts its kicking out also makes a difference, running the volume at lower levels. finer sound details are shown on the latest rainbow six, better support for play back of SACD through HDMI, nicer more compact remote with a gloss finish towards the bottom half. Alot better now with the 4 HDMI, I was one short on the 605 got one spare with the 606 (excuse to upgrde to sky HD ) the one thing i will say is that you loose the optical on the front on the 606 and it dosent come with a blanking plate to cover the sockets but thats something I will just have to live with, all in all its a cracking piece of kit and well worth the extra dosh.

Regards
Mark
