Onkyo 605 or Pioneer VSX1017?

Newbie here, I have searched read manuals etc.
As the title - The head says 605 but can't get the VSX out of my head (possibly looks etc)
I am not too bothered about the HDMI converting etc. as I/we are alright switching inputs on the TV. Will the HD audio codecs in the 605 really make that much difference.
My connected equip. will be hopefully.
Sky HD
Pioneer DV400 DVD
360
Wii
DVD Recorder

Can't foresee the purchase of an HD player just yet.

If you are not getting a HD player for a while then no the HD sound decoding will not be used. Have you had a listen to both amps? which speakers do you have/planning to get? as this might allow people to give better advice.

Dont mean to bump such an old thread but i am in the same situation as the OP and was hoping some more knowledgeable folk then me could comment further on the 605 v 1017.

If your not worried about the HDMI or HD audio then either of them would be great...

I have had pioneer amps in the past and currently am selling a VSX915... IMO they are great solid amps and I've never had a problem with them..

Never had a Onkyo, but have heard they are a bit more trebley than pioneers... People on here who have Onkyos can tell you if that is right or wrong I guess...

Best thing really is see if you can listen to them (or the new versions in shops. At least you'll get an idea of the difference in sound between makes, even if not the same models)

I have the Pioneer VSX1016, which as far as I can tell is identical to the newer model. It is a great amp when it works- however I am having problems with mine as it keeps cutting out. It may be a fault with the unit or it could be with the Pioneer range in general- don't know. Not saying you shouldn't get the VSX1017 but its worth bearing in mind.

I'm also thinking of changing and am trying to decide between the Onkyo you suggest, or the Sony STR-DA1200E now that its come down in price.

At the end of the day it all depends how good HD audio is over SD 5.1 sound.
