One of Many Reasons Not To Follow a GPS

GPS coordinates lead demolition crew to destroy wrong house

Tired of blaming GPS on petty mishaps like the destruction of cars, a demolition crew in Georgia has managed to accidentally destroy an entirely wrong house based on GPS coordinates. Oddly enough, it wasn't even the first time they'd been by: the man who cuts the grass noticed that the power box was missing from the home and holes were punched into the walls about a month ago -- it was suspected as vandalism, but it now seems that the stealthy, directionless demolition company was to blame. The demolition company says it had "paperwork" authorizing the destruction, complete with the coordinates and a description of the home, which the owner's father had built with his own hands "brick by brick."

Good job no one was sleeping inside. The demolition crew were probably illegals who couldn't read the address & instructions they were given.

thats a bit harsh and could be taken offensively to some i expect

from the interview and the article it appears the demo team had been given permission and GPS co-ordinates, they had arrived at the end of the road and assumed it was that house though if you watch the video they believe it is another nearby house

Nice

why use GPS and not just look at the number of the house

All mock liberal outrage aside, it's actually extrememly likely. A huge amount of manual labour like this is done by illegals in the US. They were probably hired on some street corner that morning.

Hi,

Whoever did this, was either stupid or bone idol, and simply couldn't be arsed to check whether or not they'd got the correct property. :( Surely if your job involves destroying something, you'd double or even triple-check that what you were about to destroy was the correct thing?

Good job no one was sleeping inside. The demolition crew were probably illegals who couldn't read the address & instructions they were given.
Wild Weasel: you're comment is definitely of a dubious nature, and there is no indication of who did the job! For all you know, if may have been a team of responsible, respectible demolition workers, with 30 years in the business, who made a simple (but costly and nasty) mistake! Claiming it to have been performed by "illegals" is both deeply offensive and of no actual relevance to the story! :( It's also a piece of humour that is in poor taste.

What part of 'probably' didn't you understand?

Amazing, a simple thread on some fools in the USA knocking down the wrong house turns into a debate on illegal immigrants in a couple of posts time. :rotfl:

Hi,

Wild Weasel - the problem people have with your quote, is not your use of the word "probably", but the fact that you even chose to blame one section of society for the issue under discussion!

If you'd have said: "It was probably a team of women / blacks / Danish / Germans / Jews / Japanese / Koreans, or whatever other section(s) of society that you wish to include, it's still an inappropriate comment / fascile (sp?) attempt at humour.

The use of the word "probably" is not great in and of itself, because you are basically saying that there was a highly likely chance that it was a set of illegal immigrants. This is what "probably" means: something with a higher than normal chance of happening.

Isn't the US census going to add GPS co-ordinates for every residence's front door ?

One has to wonder why on earth they need to do this when they have postal addresses which must have worked to get the census form delivered and returned !

Christ, lighten up people. Do people really take offence at comments like Wild Weasel's? Whilst it might not be right to think it or say it, I can't believe so many people actually care all that much.

^^yeah this is PC gone mad, shame on you if you assumed he was talking about mexicans or polish dudes, could have been some illegal brits or canadians

And people wonder why our troops get hit by friendly fire.
maybe because our troops are not equipped with IFF systems as good as the yanks.

They are but the yanks just ignore them

For example, remember the A10 pilot said he saw 'orange' rockets on the back of a vehicle. These 'orange' rockets were in fact a bright orange metre square identification panel to stop such things happening

You could have kept that much shorter by saying " Wild Weasel, which bit of probably didn't you understand? "

:)

Could have been avoided if we used some sort of transponder and not just metre squares which must be pretty hard to eyeball at high altitudes and high speeds.
