I finally managed to watch the whole film in one go but I need a bit of help. After the boot leggers are caught and killed, who is it that goes after Noodles and why?

Max (James Woods) is not lying burned up on the street, but rather has legged it. The third body is identifed as Max, but is probably some innocent person. This leaves Max alive, free to send round the heavies after Noodles.

Cheers. I suspected as much, seemed a bit strong though. The other bit that didn't make sense was:if Max took the money how come Fat Moe didn't know who took it even though he was the key holder. All be it a key holder that got beaten to a pulp.

I can't remember the details but I disagree with the initital explanation:
its not Max who sends round the heavies its the other guy that they've all ended up working for ... can't remember exactly who he is but I'll need to give it another viewing. Its definitely not down to max. Its possible that Max has completely predicted this outcome ie noodles betraying the scheme to the police to save Max and the others from getting killed. The convenient burned body identified as Max is too neat. Max has gone to ground. This is Max's way of starting afresh and becoming a clean powerful political mover rather than a 2bit gangster.

    *Ah,

The Joe Pesci character? That would make sense as he is on the tv report near the end of the film

The reason I believe it to be Max, is because the guys who are after him keep mentioning the fact that he ratted on his friends. It seems too personal to be Joe, and they don't end up working for Joe, as they are their own bosses, as per the discussion in the car before they drive into the river - That's my reading of it, although the film is ambiguos to say the least
