Play are now stocking the R0 Brazillian discs of the 2 mentioned above for the considerably-cheaper-than-I've-found-anywhere-else £16.99.
They're listed in the R2 section and they're in stock.

Do we know what the picture quality is like on these two disks. The fact their Brazilian disks does not make me confident it's going to be to clever.:(

They actually come from Greece, although they are reworkings of the original Brazilian disks. The only change I believe is the 5.1 tracks, although I am sceptical about how good these are.

It seems that Greece was one of the few countries where rights for these titles were available / not legally tied up so some enterprising company picked them up.

Also for Name of the Rose I can not find anywhere whether the disk is anamorphic, as it is w/s 1.85 The French release is I believe letterboxed and can not find an anamorphic one anywhere.

I would also like to know if it's anamorphic and what it's like overall. I love this film and really want it but only if it's better than a VHS. I wonder who has the rights to it in the UK and if they plan to do anything about releasing it here.

Maybe squirrel god could buy it and tell the rest of us if it's any good.

After all it is a classic film and I know he would like it.;) :D

My VHS was released by 4 Front (part of Polygram) now I believe OOP but was an independent film rather than one of their own productions.
With Polygram bought by Universal the film catalogue was split between MGM (older releases) and Universal, so may be one of these or even fallen into a black hole given they were only the distributors.

As its OOP unlikely to be either of these. MGM have been very good releasing back catalogue to DVD especially in the US and no sign, whereas Universal only got newer titles and this was from the late 80s I seem to remember.

I'll shout when mine have arrived but within minutes of my initial post on this thread The Name Of The Rose went out of stock, so that one will take a bit longer.

I see OUATIA has popped up in Play's R1 listings now for £15.99 and with a release date of some time around the end of August (20th?).
I wonder if it's the same disc. There's no real details listed. Not even an aspect ratio

My OUATIA arrived today and it's dual layered, which at least puts it ahead of the Brazilian disc.
Hasn't been near the player yet though.

Name of the Rose is a R0 NTSC Letterbox release, despite being annotated as anamorphic in the disc specification section on the packaging.

Only had a chance to wach a few minutes of it so far, but the transfer has not received any restoration - 'featuring' as it does all the scratches and dust presumably present on the 'master'. Having said that the dual layer format allows a fair bit of fat for the encoding which seems pretty good; there are a number of dark scenes in the movie which are presented well with good shadow detail.

Sonically the 5.1 remaster seems succesful, with plenty of extension in to the sub region and a natural soundfield. Needless to say the NTSC format means the voice pitches are correct.

Yes, the line structure is visible when blown up on a 50" screen. But for the moment where else you gonna get this film on disc? It is far better than the VHS version after all.

    :( .

Perhaps I should have a word with someone at 4front and see if they have any plans for a UK release on DVD. After all I work for the same group they are a part of. I will make some enquiries.

The trouble with them is I doubt they will put much effort into it as they are a budget release company.

Wish I could tell you:( My player wouldn't even recognise it had a disc in it. and I'm now awaiting my replacement. I'm guessing it's a disc fault as I played discs either side of my attempt with OUATIA and they played fine. Doesn't make it any less of a pain in my arse though:rolleyes:
Hopefully my replacement and Name Of The Rose will fare a bit better.

I have now seen OUATIA region 1 available for pre order on 3 sites.

It is listed as 4:3 on 2 and 1.85:1 anamorphic on the other.

It is listed as DD5.1 on 2 and DPL on the other.

It is listed as the 227 minute version on 2 and the USA 143 minute version on the other.

Can anyone confirm details of the the region 0 version please
