Hello, there was a thread on this topic recently and a number of opinions exchanged but none really helpful. As I was ****** out with the low light performance I took the steps that led me to the problem resolving.
I could obtain the LCD-TFT matrix spec and found out the backlight system brightness adjust control pin. Normally it is pulled up to 5V and an open collector stage from the CPU pulls it down to the desired level, when brightness it adjusted. All you have to do is to put a variable resistor between bright_adj pin and gnd to change the initial voltage level corresponding to the backlight starting level according to your preference.
Now I have real deep black, aweseome contrast and nice low light details.
