OMG a Sub moment (or two) in music

I was gobsmacked today after listening to the multi-channel DTS DVD "Audio" from the Blue Man Group.

If you can get yourself an audition or better still buy it, listen to track 9, Club Nowhere. I have to say that my sub is well EQ'd and listening to that track is absolutely awesome. Give it a go. For a 5.1 music DVD you won't be disappointed; it'll test your sub set up to the limit!

I've been using BMG 'The Complex' on CD and DVD-A as a demo and audition piece for a while now. 'Piano Smasher' is a personal favourite.

I like quirky stuff, especially when its put out by a crowd who value sound quality above airplay.

Oops! I'm dissing commercialism. I hope that doesn't land me in hot water again.

Heard about the BMG being good workout for subs. And dammit you just made me order a couple of their DVD's, so much for saving cash :rotfl: .

I have "The Complex" on plain old cd, and must admit 'Piano Smasher" is also one of my favourites.

Another cd I recently acquired is the soundtrack to 'Gladiator', the bass content throughout this cd is pretty awesome too, there is one track on cd2 I think it was track 12 'The Gladiator Waltz' had bass that would shame 'Darla' for a couple of minutes of continuous percussion. This cd has huge dynamics throughout it and is well worth a listen.

Can someone please confirm that this thing is region free, sounds really interesting , but looks like we have to order it from the States

It sounds interesting. Is it this one?

It's a CD, therefore no region coding. I'm not actually sure if DVD-A has region coding.

If it is the 'The Complex' CD we're talking about, then it's one of those that has some interactive content on it for computer users only.

The "Audio" CD is supposed to be "bassier" than Complex.

I prefer "Complex" for its guest singing artists and greater variety.

"Audio" is only instrumental.

Russ, yes it does have some computer video on it describing the instruments etc but it plays without problems on my cd player. The only down side is that I cannot make a copy due to its copy protection.

DVD-A layer is region free, however DVD-A discs also have DD/DTS layers on them, these are sometimes region free, sometimes region 1 or 2 etc....

if you are using a PC to play them, you need to turn off autostartup, otherwise your PC will prompt you to change the region of your disc drive......then just use your DVD-A software to play the DVD-A layer and you wont have that problem....

Ah, think I've sussed this out now. The OP refers to the Audio CD of the BMG. One side has DVD-A the other normal DVD with 5.1, I presume this would play normal 5.1 on my XE1.

The other album, the Complex has DTS 96/24 for DVD. I bet both would sound pretty good through the analogues on the XE1, as I would be getting the full bit-rate. Sorry to sound dumb guys, but I think I may get one of these discs, but not sure which?

I have 'The Complex' on DVD-A and CD. It may be because I run small, wall mounted, tripole surrounds, but I think the CD sounds better.

Other good fun disks include the Telarc SACD of the 1812 (It's the one with the real cannons), Avril Lavigne first album (Sk8er Boi) has some good 30Hz stuff in it), half of Madonna's recent output and of course the best test of real attack and drive, Metallicas Black Album.

TBH it's not so much the OMFG! moments that impress me with music, but more the ones where the bass stays really tight, even and a good snap to it.

The 25th Anniversay edition of Paul Simon's Graceland, inspite of the bloody awful mixing quality, has some fabulous bass lines that really sort well set up subs, from those that have just been dumped somewhere convenient.

There's a bonus version of 'Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes' which is just vocals and fretless bass. It's has some really dynamic plucked and slapped bass that runs up and down through the crossover region of the sub and speakers with real power. A real system tester.

the blue man group certainly has some great demo material for testing out subs, i have both the DTS DVD and also the DVD-A and both sound stunning.

WoW got the "audio" cd and the "the complex rock tour live" all i can say is amazing and very entertaining to boot. I think my sub enjoyed the workout it got :D .

OMG my brother just came over as "i feel love" came on and we just sat there with our jaws open, truely amazing. I think i will be inviting alot of people over to experience this i was totally blown away.

Glad to hear you enjoyed BMG! An unusual "sound" but extremely well produced and as you say, "entertaining".

Just an update: I bought "The Complex" DVD-Audio and have had a quick audition. As with anything, the more you listen the more you appreciate.

I was looking forward to hearing the Piano Smasher, and although it was loud full of low frequencies, in terms of really low frequencies that make the room vibrate but you can't hear it, I have to say that "Club Nowehere" on the "Audio" DVD justs puts all the others into shade. I can highly recommend the Club Nowhere. If you think Piano Smasher is smashin', do yourself a favour and listen to the "Audio" DVD!
