Is that the press release? Or the 99 percent full release one?

When my sis handed me my first promo I was seriously skeptical, I thought she was giving me unfinished code..I thought there was a drawback but nope, I've got about 20 of these promo's (any first party game I get about 1-2 weeks before). They're all 100%, I've patched loads. I'm online now if anyone wants to ask me stuff. No HDD install..that I can see anyway. About to fire up skirmish mode.

Well I'll find out soon enough I'm sure and I won't have any qualms shelling out on launch day as the MP seems deep.

Anyhow, just finished " chapter 1" - first impressions playing on Veteran..as many of you will know from playing the demo, the mechanics of the game - physics, shooting, movement are all very tight and have a very polished fee, particularly the animation. Coupled with 7.1 sound, this game is reall drops you into the battlefield from minute one.

There is no HDD install requirement, only a slight pause between sections of the game. Now I'm not a gfx whore so I'm not gonna really comment on what you already know..that KZ is a real looker, it has a gritty..grainy sheen to it that to me, elevates it above the glossy and too clean look of MGS4. It strives to be..hyper real if that makes sense.

I'm not even a fan of heavily scripted FPS' (because they tend to be too predictable = too easy) but the real star of this game is the A.I and it is immediately noticeable on veteran, running and gunning isn't viable..you will be taken down.

The result of all the duck and cover tactics is the kind of panic I haven't really experienced in FPS' in a longggg time. Not only are you going to be flanked but I found the Helghans frequently flushing me out with 'nades only to run into cross fire. When I thought I'd circled a H, I found he had moved and he was behind me, when I decided to wait...they never followed me around a blind corner. Hiding behind cover for prolonged periods also = doom. There were a number of times where I was outnumbered and did not look after my partner, so when he went down I really felt the heat and after respawning I found myself working the environment, watching my buddy, looking for any edge I could get. The A.I is also fair..it does not have a homing beacon effect like in other games where the enemy always seems to know where you are...there was a moment when I shot a H and then backed up into tunnel darkness...expecting the other 8 H's to rush me, but I realised they hadn't noticed me because of the smokescreen from the bullets that had peppered the wall seconds earlier! They ran straight past me for my buddies.

War shouldn't be this beautiful...towards the end of chapter 1 there is a huge ass fight involving tanks and a ton of H's..at least 15+ on screen which resulted in zero slowdown despite the repeated shelling and rpg's. That really impressed me.

On the next run I'm gonna play Ode to Joy as KZ also supports custom soundtracks..wohoo.

Finally I won't comment on the story because I don't want to spoil it and tbh I can't really do this game justice with a wall of text anyhow. I just wanna whet your appetite a bit more for release because right now this game is having the Dark Knight effect on me - it has met and exceeded my expectations.

Nice post, thanks for the write-up

Did you play the demo? How much harder would you say veteran is compared to trooper level in the demo? :)

Argghh that's annoying. Wonder why they did that?

I'd say Veteran is far more aggressive, they use 'nade's a lot more and I always feel I have to be on the move instead of just staying in one spot. I can't really say that the trooper Helghan is dumber as it's not noticeable in that way but they definitely take less hits to kill you and a sniper can pick you off easily. One thing I did notice is Helghans can get distracted by your buddy and if you choose to use this bait and switch tactic it actually does work, unlike other games where you come out of hiding and the A.I suddenly turns around as if it knew you were there all along.

This interview explains it better! :D

    Seb Downie, the QA manager at Guerilla Games explains the four difficulties in Killzone 2, over at the SCEA forums;

The difficulty system is not based on enemy counts, but more on damage modifiers and health. The health of you, your buddies and the various enemy types and the damage that all of you deal out. As the difficulty goes up, your ability to Run ‘n Gun goes down. You'll be spending more and more time ducking from cover and recharging. It becomes a lot more tactical and needs a bit more brainpower as you go up. The lower difficulty settings is more for folks who like to storm into rooms, guns blazing. Do that on the harder difficulties and you'll get more than a black eye.

Oh and Elite has no HUD or cross hairs but you can turn these off in the options at lower levels too but in Elite you have no choice.

I would think it's because the music in the single player campaign is adaptive, so it changes depending what is going on on-screen, I noticed this in the demo, when you're getting attacked by lots of Helghast the music is louder and more frantic, it changes to a slower pace when the game does :smashin:

They've gone to all that trouble putting together an amazing music score, and output it in all 7.1 glorious channels of PCM , so I'm not surprised custom soundtracks aren't an option in SP

I have a promo copy also - only on the 3rd chapter so far but the game is shaping up to be a classic. Just feels so gritty and atmospheric!

Awesome stuff - people will not be dissapointed on launch day based on what I have seen so far :)
