Its time to upgrade from my Kuro, however, i do not like the way OLED looks in comparison. At least not what I see on display in the stores. The pictures look over processed, over digitized with too much color saturation. What I would consider to be a high definition version of real life. Where as my old plasma has very natural and accurate colors and looks accurate to real life. I'm just not super impressed by unnatural looking high definition. I have never seen a properly calibrated OLED, so that could be part of the problem. I'm ready to jump off the plasma bandwagon, I'm just not overly impressed with what I see. Any thoughts on this, I would like to upgrade at some point.

The lighting in the stores are always very bright , so they use the "store" setting on the tv's . Find a smaller store that you can view ,or they may have a proper viewing room . Just read some reviews on here and hopefully then decide on what make and model that fits your requirements

I had the same concerns many moons ago. Answer is simple, go check in half descent viewing condition any of the latest oled especially pana fz series...(just stay clear of vivid mode...I want to punch sales people finding it ok...I am very peaceful most of the time compared to some guys here :) I swear...

So accurate and balanced Colors and processing that it reminds me of the plasma VT or ZT...

Same comment applies to any of the top oled of 2018 (sont, pana, LG,...). If you have oled concerns, look at Samsung Q9fn and Sony zf9 aka LCD fald.

TV's in stores are not set at the best settings, and often set to to vivid. So you can't really make an opinion, until you have seen one with decent settings. I personally think colours look decent on my B6.

Oleds look unnatural in the stores as they will be set to something like vivid or dynamic. Once you have the correct settings on them they look almost like real life to me. You can't get that with an led because of poorer blacks and viewing angles throws the image quality out.

Simple.

Take control of the remote and turn the PQ settings to isf/technicolor mode and turn the true motion off if your looking at an LG.

I have a Kuro upstairs and the OLED colours and blacks walk all over the Kuro. With some good settings you can get looking like a 4K plasma.

As others have highlighted the Displays are 'optimised' to sell 'in-store' so unless you are visiting a specialist with decent Demo facilities what you are seeing is not even close to how you will use the Display at home.

Thanks for the suggestions guys I will take some of this advice. I'm going out looking today and hoping to come home with something.

I've had kuros krp500 krp600 and still a 5090 in the front room.. I now have the Panasonic ez952 in my den ... only use it for bluray but it's very cinematic / plasma like but more detailed brighter and blacks bottomless.. like a suped up pioneer kuro... new model is fz as mentioned above in another post but alot more expensive than the 2017 ez model.. good luck

I just checked the hours on my Kuro and it is at 18,552 so it should still have quite a few years ahead of it before it has dimming issues. We are going to move it into our game room. I am going to Best Buy ( do they have Best Buy stores there?) and I will see if they have the model you have recommended. I'm going to ask for the remote and play around with some of the settings and hopefully I can find a dark room for viewing. I'm not too concerned about price at this point because it is something I plan on keeping for 10 years.

No best buy here in the UK but get the remote take the frame rate to off, and put in professional mode 1 and it will give you some idea if they could let you put on a bluray be even better... I took in Halloween and T2.. My kuro has been voltage tweaked so it's very black but this tv was darker absolute black but cleaner image.. hdr films in 4k are awesome.. I auditioned the Sony A1 and LG but came away with the Panasonic as so similar to plasma

I still remember sneaking in the theater when I was a kid to see it . My brother and I were pretending we were Terminators while we walked home. Good times!

Yes I was 12 when it came out and got in as was quite tall and wore a cap..
But regarding the tv give the Panasonic oleds a go as after pioneer stopped with the kuros they were the king of tv/ and think they've brought that know how

T2, best movie ever made!

And amongst the worst UHD ever made too.

OP,

I hope you don't end up buying a Sony Trinitron :)

Based.on my recent in store experience, I prefer the LG for 4K and Sony for balanced PQ. I have no idea why the Panny looked awful running the same video loop. I am sure IFC was set to Max but I was seeing micro stutter, less saturated colours and grey blacks.

I must admit that Sony A1E is still the sexiest looking TV ever made. You just can't stop admiring it.

Just less than a week left for my 65C8 delivery

We actually just got back and i bought the Sony 65" A1E series. They are delivering it for us later today and the first thing im going to do is mirror with my Kuro and tweak with the settings to see if I can get a natural look out of it. They said if I was unhappy they would exchange it.

Latest update: we are returning the TV. We had it set up and had the guy do some calibrations on it and I must admit it looks fantastic. The picture is crisper than anything I've ever seen and the colors are very very vivid, the blacks look pretty good as well and the motion tracking isn't terrible. The problem is it looks just like they do in the store, over-processed, too much color saturation and unnatural . Maybe a better way to explain it: I have a beautiful view of Mount Rainier out my window. If I were to watch a high-definition live feed of the same view as out my window on my Kuro it would be indistinguishable from me actually just me looking out the window at it. If I were to do the same with the Sony, it would look unnatural like an enhanced ultra high definition version of what I see when I look out the window with enhanced colors. It just looks darn on unnatural to me. I'm a little upset right now and don't know what I'm going to do going forward.

What you're probably seeing is the fact that oleds cover a much bigger percentage of dci-p3 colour space compared to plasmas, so what the oleds display is actually much closer to real life than what any plasma could produce, you're probably just used to the muted colours the kuro produces, I've had the best plasmas made including a lx5090, a krp500, Panasonic vt65, Panasonic zt65 etc, and I wouldn't give up oled to go back to any of them in all honesty

Aforementioned, Sony Trinitron with 256 colours would be the ideal choice for the OP :)

These TVs sports 10-bit panels and offers better coverage of colours pace,so you are going to see more colours out of the box

What picture mode/s did the guy calibrate?

As previously mentioned I tried the Sony great tv and nice looking but the Panasonic did it for me like a plasma but more detailed have to take it off of dynamic or vivid at least natural or one the professional modes.. may be what you are looking for as I'm plasma fan too.. if not maybe stick with the kuro for a while longer

Maybe you would be happier with the upcoming Sony Oled AF9. These are due out very soon and are supposed to be very close in picture quality to the sony mastering monitors. They will most likely be the most accurate picture quality on a consumer television once they arrive. Then again you could just be so used to the image of the Kuro that new TV's will look very different to you but unfortunately that might be something you'll just have to deal with. I would personally recommend trying either the New Panasonic Oled's or the upcoming Sony AF9.
