Mostly looking at picture/sound quality, not extras. Just got my projector system working, so I want the best transfers. Also interested in flippers->non-flippers; corrected aspect ratios etc.

eg, is Fifth Element superbit (R1) better than R2 standard?

Ipcress file R1 is correct aspect ratio and anamorphic, R2 is 4:3 (shocking Carlton knockup)

    Is Goodfellas non-flipper anywhere?

Well the one it particular that you ask about, The Fifth Element, is definitly worth replacing. In my opinion, and many others for that matter, the Superbit verison of The Fifth Element is one of the best loking DVDs around, if not THE best. I did a comparison review a while back if it helps

Although I haven't seen the new version - Unforgiven - re-release is supposed to have remastered video. I have the original and it is pretty bad in most places, especially the night scenes. Anyone out there have the new version? Any better?

If you have the R2 of Shawshank Redemption, you'd be better off with another region. The R4 is particularly good.

Non-flipper of Goodfellas is apparently on its way :)

I think there was some talk a bit back on the forum that they were doing a new copy of it, could be why they have been selling it very cheap lately to make way for new stock.
Try doing a search on it.

They are reference quality transfers, particularly Jackie Brown. Shame the same can't be said of Reservoir Dogs - I found it almost unwatchable and stuck with the R2 instead.

My region 1 of reservoir dogs is good , not excellent but very watchable , I have lots of worse transfers , the DTS soundtrack is very good though.

I returned the R1 I was so disgusted. No proper black level, charcoal grey seeming the best it could manage. Contrast problems. Muddy, washed out colours. I couldn't stand it. Yes there are worse transfers, and if the R1 SE was all that was available, I would have stuck with it. But the R2 regular edition is a far superior transfer and less than half the price of the R1 SE.

Strange I didnt find that at all , im very picky when it comes to picture quality and my DVD player and plasma show up any short comings , just checked it and the black level is very good , my version is Mr Pink , I assume thats the version you are talking about , I have read on another forum people have found different quality in transfers between Mr White , Mr Black etc . Seems strange though may be its a quality control thing.

Weird if each version has different quality. It's supposed to be the same disk, only the covers that are different.

    I had the Mr Brown.

I'm not fussed about all the extras, just want it to look better - it must be one of the worst ones I have.

The BBC had to quickly withdraw it from sale for "legal reasons". Something to do with them not owning the rights to certain things in it. I also managed to get this first release, the re release has commentaries on it though, so it may be worth getting.

Day time scenes look very good indeed. Night exteriors look good too. However dark interiors are very variable, considering the most powerful scenes take place at night, indoors, this is a disappointment.

Where background is in shadow, where you would hope for solid dark black, the shadows and edges of walls show patches of purple staining - similar to magnetic staining on a CRT tv.

There are one or two lip synch problems but nothing major.

The extras are well worth a look.

The only version re-release I've bought is Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition.

I have the Terminator 2 in the snapper case -from Live, and the bass is alot better in the Ultimate Edition.

    PQ is the same though.

I had the original release of Blue Velvet, but I replaced it with the R1 Special Edition, primarily for the anamorphic transfer.

You're not sad on your own, i'm, looking out for this one too.

    Veru under-rated film IMO.

    Predator SE R2
One flew Over the Cuskoo's Nest SE R2
    Highlander Immortal Edition R1
    Great Escape SE R2

All superior to their barebone counterparts.

I have the region 1, 2-disc re-release of Unforgiven. I thought it blew the original disc away. I never had any lip-sync problems. A classic.

If you owned any of the original DVD's in the WB Stanley Kubrick collection it's definitely upgrading to the remastered version. The picture quality on most of the old one's was awful.

    One of my all-time faves!

R2 (released by Carlton, Cinema Club) - 4:3, stereo, appalling transfer (VHS quality!)

R1 (10th Anniversary Edition, released a few months ago) - 2.35:1 anamorphic, 5.1 DD & DTS, great transfer!

I rewatched this another four or five times when I got the R1 version in February.:D
