I currently run an AE Aegis sub with my Rega Jura, Ara's & Senta speakers and I have the opportunity to swap the Aegis for a slightly older REL Qbass.

I wondered if anyone had any experience of this older sub ?

    Cheers in advance

    Chris

I had a Q Bass which I bought second hand in about 1995. It was a great sub in it's day but subwoofer technology has moved on since then and it may not sound so good any more when compared to more modern designs. I don't know how long subs are supposed to last but any Q Bass will now be at least 9 years old and probably older.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but do you really think this is the case Ian? I'm not talking specifically to the REL in question, but just in general terms. How much has subwoofer technology moved on in recent years?

i had a aegis sub until last week , owned it for a year or two but have sold it and am going for a xls200 after reading what people have said on this forum.
i always thought the aegis sub was the weak link in my speaker system and am looking forward to seeing (or hearing) the bass i have been missing!

Funnily enough I was looking at BK's website earlier & thinking that the cherry xls200 could be a welcome addition to the family ...

I think I'll hang onto the Aegis until such time I hear your report ....:) (& I've saved a few more pennies !)

    Keep me posted :)

should be with me tomorrow or wednesday , cant wait!!!

when i went to buy my aegis setup (minus the sub) i also listened to the b&w and monitor packages and while the monitors had better rears i prefered the aegis to these and the b&w's.
when i got the sub it was a diferent story , i was unimpressed by its slowness in comparison to the speakers.while it helped at the bottom end i always thought something with a bit of speed would make a great deal of difference to my set up , and this week i will find out!

i am no expert in acoustics i am afraid , but i will try my best to let you know how much better it is compared to the aegis sub.

I notice something similar, whilst it does create a low down rumble it seems at times to be almost a bit lazy at times.

I'll be waiting with baited breath for your findings !

oh & could I ask how much you sold your AE sub for ? (to give me an idea of how many extra pennies I'm going to need if you're impressed with the BK lol)

I can tell you the xls200 is a very good and capable sub in a small package and now its had its amp upgraded it should be a little better.

There are bigger subs out ter with more depth and slam but nothing so small for the money.:D

plus, i couldn't choose wat finish to have! what are the black and silver finishes like, are they plastic laminate on wood? i prefer the Light Oak or Cherry, but is it real wood? this may seem a dumb question! help!

last night i watched 3 films back to back , just to get a 'feel' for my new sub.
the stand out film for me was creep , the aegis sub would have rumbled along with the film occasionally stopping to catch its breath during a quiet scene.
the BK on the other hand attacked the film soundtrack like a rottweiler every jump , scream and scare was backed up with deep , fast bass i had not experienced in my home before.it made my whole system better NOT JUST THE BASS it was like i had changed my av gear and speakers too!
the BK is streets ahead of the aegis and the best investment i have made since getting a pj.

I like black or silver for forward-firers and wood veneer for down-firers. :)

i went for the black down firer as you can see in the pics.
the colour i went for because my speakers are beech/black finish and the bk is not available in beech so i went for black.
i would say the wood finishes are not real wood at this price point , but the the quality of the finish seems exellent.

    Pictures look sweet sly.

i have to say the photos on the BK website doesn't do their subs justice in terms of build quality. From sly's XLS200 and Sonic65's Monolith their photo's show the good craftmanship that goes into building their units.

    taken from bk site:
''Due to demand we now manufacture a downward firing XLS200. The downward firing version performs exactly the same as the forward firing version. We have made this version available for those who prefer not to see the grill''
