Hi, just went round to a mates to run a ethernet cable to his desktop and laptop. He has a really old NTL modem and it does not use a standard ethernet port.

His ISP is Virgin Media so you have the cable running to the back of the NTL modem and then that is currently connected to his laptop via a USB cable, not seen that before?

There is no standard ethernet port on the modem only the USB and some type of square looking ethernet port, is this an old type or something?

Not sure what to advise him to do, looks like a whole new modem / router I think.

Any advice?

very old

if he rings them, they will surely replace with one with an ethernet port, then at least he can get a wireless router and connect multiple devices ...which is not possible with what he has now ......

Is the modem shown here?

Well, I had a NTL 100 before the Virgin Media 255 I have now and it defiantly had a standard Ethernet port which I had connected to my Buffalo router.
