hi all,i,ve just read sound reviews of rambo trilogy,i,m not surprised its bad,i must say i relish the thought of an 70,s or 80,s golden oldie movie being released in glorious 5.1 sound but they dont sound great,i really got into dvd for the sound full stop,i,m very easily pleased with picture,my missus and i are great fans of alien series,1 and 2 are brill,3and 4 crap, well i bought new box set for xmas,i think the sound is 3.1 ,no surround action at all,i,ve come to the conclusion that pre dolby digital movies soung bad in 5.1 ,dolby or dts,why is this, can anyone shed some light, pat

Not all sound bad it just depends on if they spend some decent money remixing and remastering the film, take a film like E.T. it sounds superb.

Likewise "Superman" sounds superb because they took their time. New edition of "West Side Story" is sounding pretty good too.

I disagree Indiana Jones underwhelmed me and should have been a lot better.

    SO WHAT???

I'd sooner watch a 70 year old movie like "Bride of Frankenstein" with its tinny, scratchy mono soundtrack 100 times over, than be forced to endure an abomination like "Attack of the Clones" in all its THX glory even one more time.

Yes but I'd rather listen to Attack of the Clones 100 times over rather than endure Bride of Frankenstein with its tinny, scratchy mono soundtrack just once ;)

Sorry but I really disagree with that comment, the new Quadrilogy transfers and sound are superb, Alien being a point in case with some very well used surrounds to create a believable soundfield. It's not all about crash bang and wallop. Believe it or not some of my favourite sound mixes have no guns or explosions anywhere.

Don't agree with that at all. Attack of the clones is a terrible film - albeit a good sounding one. Bride Of Frankenstein is a timeless classic. I think I've watched my DVD of BOF at least 20 times. I've watched clones once...
And the soundtrack on the Universal Monster classic version of BOF is devoid of all hissing and scratching - it's actually quite clear for a 70 year old...

I've got 1st Blood Spec.Ed R1 in dts & TBH IMO doesn't really sound that much better than my old pro-logic VHS copy I used to have.

    Still you live & learn....:p  :D

I'll just say that Attack of the Clones is a brilliant film :D

And no, I'm not on crack ;)

Back on topic, I haven't heard many really bad 5.1 soundtracks. Some I've heard that are 5.1 could easily just be stereo, as they don't use the sub or rear speakers.

The UK disc from Anchor Bay of House has a shockingly bad 5.1 mix. At least they left the 2.0 on it too.

hi all,i did wonder if this topic would get a lot of reply,s,as i said, dvd to me is fantastic sound and i do appreciate widescreen very much, you see a bit more,so its seems that if you spend a lot of money you can get an exciting full 5.1 mix on any film, including surround action, mmm, well as i ,ve said i wont buy oldish movies for said reason,i love Back to the Future films, was tempted to buy,but i,ll just rent the box set from local surrey library for 1 week and test the sound, will give report soon, rgrds pat

Actually, presenting silent movies on DVD is an interesting challenge. I've seen a few (e.g. Fritz Murnau's "Nosferatu") with modern, "techno-sounding" soundtracks. Some offer a choice of musical accompaniment!

Any fans of Fritz Lang out there? The Nibelungen Saga from 1924 was the LOTR of its time! You can laugh about the special effects, but eighty years from now I'm sure people will do the same about LOTR!

Couldnt agree more. I also find whizz bang boom soundtracks far too distracting in 5.1, and much prefer a good subtle use of surround sound.

i found the alien quadrilogy sound to be exellent and indiana jones to be good to.

old movies do tend to sound bad in 5.1 in general i think. somtimes if it is remastered well they can sound good as in the 2 films above.
