To do what you want to do, you need an Xbox fitted with a modchip (I would recommend going for something from the Xecuter range), and a suitable dashboard (EvoX tends to be the most popular, but Avalaunch is far "prettier" IMO).

For pre-modded Xbox's, I would suggest paying a visit to Baldbouncer - not necessarily the cheapest (although their prices are pretty good IMO), but i've used them to buy several modchips now and have always been very pleased with the service :)

Yes, no problems at all having it set to 480P or above and then playing on Live with the Mod off...

Mmmm. Most pal games dont support HD. You need to patch them to get it or the NTSC version.

Nope, not right i'm afraid. All my PAL originals run at 480P with my XBox set to NTSC and the Mod Chip off. The games are universal and it's the XBox that sorts the video output out. This can easily be seen on the region free games like Rainbow Six etc which will play on any XBox...

I had heard some time ago that some games would set a flag that you had modded your xbox, and then send this info when you were on xbox live, even if you had the mod switched off at the time. Is this incorrect?

What is the highest resolution a modded xbox can display (and is this dependant on your chosen mod)?

Once the mod is done, does it make any difference which region of a game you buy, or are they all the same resolution etc, as suggested above?

    Thanks

Not sure on that buddy. All I know is that I set mine to NTSC then turn the mod off. I can then enable 480P, 720P and 1080i and when I go on Live (with PGR2, TRD2, RS3, RSC2 etc) it work just fine. Dependant on the game, the XBox will do up to 1080i (on things like Enter The Matrix and Dragons Lair 3D) but I don't know if the PAL versions will allow this or just the NTSC. I'm certainly no expert in this, just telling it how it is for me. Maybe xbox-scene.com will have some more in depth answers?

I can say from personal experience that most of my pal xbox games dont produce the high def picrure. Yes they run but you dont get the benefit.

You have to patch them to get HD.

How do you patch the games for hi def?

PS - Sorry for all the repetetive newbie questions
Maybe we could have a sticky explaining all the pros and cons of modding, whats involved and how to go about it.

You can download the patches I believe. There are two options,

    (1) Get an uprated hd when you get your xb chipped. Upload your games to the HD and patch them in situe.

    (2) make a backup of your games. Patch them then burn to dvdr.

Neither option is desirable in my opinion (Although uprated hd for fast loading is, I went for this). Personally I buy ntsc version of games. They are usually cheaper and released before the pal versions.

PAL games run unpatched at 480P (with XBox set to NTSC) which is way better than regular interlace through the components or RGB Scart...

harrisuk - when you talk about Hi Def are you meaning 480P or higher?

harrisuk - BTW, do you have an early model XBox? When I had my original one (a launch day machine) with a Matrix mod, a lot of new PAL games at the time would not load with the XBox set to NTSC (Midtown Madness, Indycar and Enter the Matrix spring to mind).

I sold that and then bought another machine last Christmas (Halo/MM3 pack) and got a Xecuter 2.2 Lite fitted. I bought a new official Hi Def pack and bingo, all PAL games work as I say in 480P. So maybe it's the newer revision Xbox, a newer revsion Hi Def Pack, something to do with the mod? Who knows....

Still, I know they all run at 480P and look great at 7'. I'm happy :)

Yes. Firstly I have found some Pal games wont even run in ntsc mode - You get the sound but a blank screen. (Example Time splitters 2). If you cant run them in NTSC mode you cant get the better quality picture.

Secondly it is well documented that many Pal games dont turn out the HD picture unless they are patched. There are threads on this forum on this topic (If I could find them I would link but this has been discussed before by more knowledgable people than me).

You will see an improvement using a hd cable over rgb scart anyway, component cables produce a better picture in my opinion. Mine wasnt an early xbox I got one around 6 months after launch.

I have heard rumours that some Pal games will work in HD, Notably Rainbow Six that you mentioned. Doing some searching around on google I found this :

This could explain some of the difference in opinion. If these games (which seem to be mainly live enabled) are not region locked it could explain why you have pal games that work in hd mode.

I am just going off personal experience. At some point I will go through my Pal games, which is an ever diminishing number and list the ones that wont run in ntsc mode. I suppose its a starting point.

We could do with some of the more experienced chaps who have discussed this before to show up to clarrify the situation to be honest.

Almost all PAL games will run in 480p (or above in some cases) on a chipped Xbox as long as you change the video mode to NTSC (I'm not talking about the region just the video mode) using Enigmah Videomode Switch Disc.

You can still play on Live (chip off of course) and enjoy a 480p picture.

In the case of Time Splitters 2 the only way to get 480p is to back uo the PAL one and get the NTSC default.xbe to replace the PAL one.

There are some PAL and NTSC games that need patching to run in 480p, check out this thread from Xbox-Scene for info - http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=210156

Here's a list of NTSC Xbox games and what they output as a guide to the PAL ones because, for the most part, they're the same.
    http://www.hdtvarcade.com/xboxlist.htm
It's also nice to see that the Xbox supports a lot of 16:9 games.

Thanks. So most are 480p, with a few at 720p and a couple at 1080i. And that's an NTSC box, or modded uk box, switched.

What would a std uk box output?

This isn't getting any easier

I shall be sending the signal via a processor (Lumagen HDP) which will 1:1 pixel map with my HD plasma. I don't know what difference there will be between feeding the Lumagen 480i & 480p - maybe that's one for the processor forum.
