I have looked in the manual for my Panasonic PWD6, for 2 things.

1 Can I leave it on standby, instead of having to switch it off all the time.

2 The picture keeps automatically adjusting itself. I am watching it through cable and put it to 'just', but when the adverts come on it switches itself to 16.9. It is quiter annoying.

    Please help.

1, I personally think its better to use the power switch if not being used, ok, standby is alright if your going to switch it back on after a while but for long periods its safer as well. I remember a crt i went out to which had caught fire, set was in standby and remote was stuck down the sofa emitting the on/off signal constantly. Not sure how much power it uses in standby compared to a crt though. Better safe than sorry.
2, Seems normal to switch to 16:9 on the just setting, why would you want to watch a 16:9 source in just mode anyway? it should return to just mode after the commercials, well it does on mine.
Auto mode seems to switch from just to zoom if there is a dark picture which can be annoying, anyone?

i would advise turning your plasma off. it is fine to leave it in standby for a little bit, but for long periods of time (4-5 hours) it is best to turn it off. You do not want your plama overheating. it is always better to be safe than sorry. you can also call the manufacture of your plasma and ask them what to do.

    regards, admerial

Since it says in the manual that power consumption in standby is about 4 watts, I don't think overheating is much of a risk.

Most displays are designed to be left in standby nowadays, not switched off all thge time, fire service tend to argue tho.

I suppose its only the same as leaving a video recorder in standby, I dont know anyone who turns their video off.

    Aren't there 2 types of standby ?
Passive and active if I'm not mistaken, passive is fine to be left on all the time while it is better to switch active standby off every night, might be wrong though

My brother in law is coming to stay at the weekend, and he won't be sleeping soundly! He's been a fire fighter for a long time, and at his house everything except the fridge gets unplugged when it's not used.

When he sees my TV, DVD, VCR, XBOX, PS2, PC's x 2, AV Amp left plugged in all the time he'll have nightmares! :D

I've never ever subscribed to the unplug theory, so far, so good! ;)
