I've recently bought the infamous Panasonic TH-42PV500B and although I am really happy with the picture quality from the built in Freeview tuner, SKY+ and DVD, I know this tv is capable of much more.

I've noticed even on a direct digital DVD feed over HDMI, on some DVD source material (normally stuff that has been studio video'd in the UK), that there are black horizontal lines in some parts of the screen, and "jaggies". These are not present all the time.

This leads me to believe that I'd get a much better picture, by using either a dedicated Scaler, or an HTPC with dscaler and a Sweetspot card (or similar).

If I went the latter route, then no doubt I'd be looking at a self build, or can anyone point me in the right direction for some pre-built models?

I've seen the hi-grade, acer, elonex etc..., and some others. All of which have good and bad points.

There doesn't seem to be much choice in the pre-built market.

Unless of course someone knows different and can steer me to it!

What benefit is the sweetspot card to you for dvd playback? I don't know a great deal about the product by why not ffdshow + VGA output and spend the leftover cash on a faster processor?
