Any idea why the remote gets assigned controller number "7", and the lights for 3 & 4 show up when the PS3 button is pressed to check which controllers are connected?

Why not just give it the next available number like a normal sixaxis?

So it doesn't conflict/confuse if you then connect other pads to play.

As Tigandken says, so that the remote doesn't get controller "one" if the PS3 is turned on with it. I have an infra red remote as well that plugs into the USB. If it is plugged in at power up it assumes controller "1" and you have no controller in games from the sixaxis so you have to re-assign it every time you start the PS3. Sony obviously came across this with their Bluray remote and have catered for it by using controller "7" for the bluray remote.

I had wondered about that until I got an infra red adapter so that I could use my AV remote for movie watching in the dark (lights up the buttons)
