    Hello all,

I'm going travelling around New Zealand and Australia very soon. Please can you recommend suitable digital cameras for me. I need the obvious things such as compact and lightweight but want to be able to blow up any beauties I may get on my return.

Look forward to hearing from you all..

Well the landscape of NZ is so beautiful it warrents DSLR like the canon 300D but you want compact. Just how compact do you want? What size prints do you want? Do you want a zoom lens? Do you want a point and shoot? Whats your budget?

If you want somthing that would fit in your pocket then the Canon S60 is a good choice. It's 5mp so you'll great A4 pics easy, and it's fully manual for when you become more advanced.

Loads to choose from, if you could give a little more detail it would be easier to help:)

Budget has to be under £500, compact so that's it can easily live in pocket, as higher optical zoom as poss, Whne u take the picture it actually takes it rather than an annoying delay. It's early days so i'm not to sure on specifics. How'd u rate sony cameras. It's just I have a sony camcorder with a couple of memory sticks which I thought I could utilise..

Well the Sony W1 gets great reviews. But i'd take the S60, but then i'm a canon fan and i dont like sony's memory stick. Anything that fits in your pocket is not going to have more then 3 x really. Its always a trade off with smaller cameras.

Well i've just noticed that the S70 is out already http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/s70.html you can add a telephoto lens taking it up to 7x zoom, its 7.1mp so you'll have no trouble printing large prints

I read some good reviews of the Pentax Optio 555 here which has a 5 * zoom but I heard the lens cover is a little on the flimsy side.

Also the Olympus 765 here just slightly above pocket size has a 10* zoom and is the smallest 10* out there as far as I know.
See the Just Got An Olympus 765 thread here a lot of use are well suited with the camera.

Read the post wrong and got mixed up with one further down. I was thinking he wanted to get in close to something rather than blow the image up. :suicide:

He's not going to be able to stick them his pocket Jayde. Which is one of the main things he's after. So zoom lenes and dslr's are out. Which i would recommend to him also, but it's a size issue for him

The Canon Ixus 500 I took to Portugal with me is nice and compact and fits in the pocket easily. It only has a 3x zoom and doesn't give you a lot of manual options but for landscape and general shots I'm very pleased with it.
But then again, I'm also a fan of Canon !

The info on the Pentax 555 still hold true as it a 5 mega pixel camera and has a 5* zoom and looks to be compact enough. But remember the more pixels you use the less pictures you can take on a memory card.

Looking at the 55 it takes 2 seconds without the flash or about 4 seconds with to take an image. Seems pretty sluggish

They are bigger then what our guy wants as they wont slip in and out of his pocket. He wants a true compact. I would advice him to go with something like the the cannon S1 or garretts 765.

But they're not compact enough for him. No 10x 12 zoom is going to . So the S70 is compact and he can add a zoom lens if he feels the need, it has plenty of resolution for those big prints he spoke of. Sounds like a plan to me

I'd like to thank you all for your knowledge and time. Bizarrely I forgot about posting a thread on here but have ended up purchasing an S70 as recommended!?!

Reading the replies has confirmed to me I've made a sound choice...

Cheers Everyone... (Let’s just hope it makes it here from the states..)
