This is a great move for both Oculus and MS. Initially, you can stream certain games to XB1, but I'm sure we'll see fully fledged Oculus games for Xbox.

    You guys are high!

You have to understand that this is only streaming game screen footage to the device and not controlling the game. This was always a given back when Microsoft announced the Windows 10 and Xbox One streaming thing.

IMO it's pretty worthless even boasting about it but as MS are flogging their pads with the Headset then fair enough.

This is Microsoft/Xbox only input towards the VR hardware war and trust me there will be a war. Remember, MS/Xbox are not building hardware.

Just to add to this, There is absolutely no reason why you couldn't stream Xbox One games to Oculus or the HTC VR(which is reported as excellent so far) or even Sony's Morpheus, if that is not just restricted to only the Playstation(which for a hardware company like Sony would be crazy if they could sell it to PC heads too).

What's that supposed to mean ? No one is getting carried away but surely it's always better to have more options and choices as a gamer.

Would be good for people that already have one, can sit back and play cinema style big screen effect on the X1, but since it's not proper VR someone would be pretty mad to buy one just to use with the X1 that way (unless turns out to be brilliant).

Ive not used one for VR loads on here have so if any are reading they may well jump in. But if real VR can be had at some point on the X1 in some games then all good.
Hard to imagine being in the game if not tried one and i cant wait for consumer but imagine "xbox live arcade" Like this... :)

80's Arcades are back in Virtual Reality!...

I was wondering if MS would go with Oculus on the XB1. To my mind it makes sense. Let someone else pay all the development costs and just add support for it to the console. Meanwhile they're putting their development money into HoloLense so they get two for the price of one.

It looks like it's very basic support at the moment, but in time they may be able to add full support and we may get some proper VR games on XB1. Now Elite Dangerous in VR I would be very interested in! :D

    Im pretty excited by this.

I've used a rift and its amazing, to have it partnered with xbox can only be great, as Sony have Morpheus, MS simple HAD to secure the rif as if they had to go out and create their own there would be 3 VR sets out there and thats to many i think.

The ability to play current xb1 games on a virtual cinema screen is a pretty good start, in the future we must see full Oculus only xb1 games, but not only games, think of that virtual cinema for your film collection.

Trouble for me is it needs a pc and i dont have one at home!

Maybe I need to try one but for me I can't get excited about it.
I never liked wearing 3D Glasses and sometimes not a fan of wearing a headset and just prefer to sit on my sofa in my games room, turn up the TV loud and just play with the controller in hand.

I guess it depends on how much they will cost, be it Rift or Morpheus and what it add's to the game experience.

@King Tones Its a totally different experience to just 3D.

Its one of those thing you cant explain but need to experience.

Your not sat in your front room looking at a 3D image of a spaceship cockpit (as a example) your IN the spaceship cockpit . Its the head tracking the totally fools your brain into thinking your there.

check out this video, for mainly the guys reactions at seeing the space station around 7 mins

Elite: Dangerous - Oculus Rift - COME IN RED...

BTW could we now see Elite Dangerous ship for xb1 with OR support!! As its already supported on pc and coming to xb1

Now that would be a killer game for xbox

I know it's a different experience and not comparing it to 3D just saying I don't like wearing something on my head while playing a game or watching a film.
I guess I need to try it before I reject it.

That looks absolutely awesome and I'd buy an Oculus for Elite Dangerous in a heartbeat. We need native support for the rift on the XB1 directly though. If I need the rift connected to a PC and then an XB1 to stream to the PC then it'll be a bit of a faff. Hopefully they'll be able to add actual support for it to the XB1, in which case I will definitely be buying one.

will flop just like every single console add on ever created. does anyone ever look back in time?
no one will buy it so no one will spend millions on making great games, so no one will buy it, so.....

This is What Forza Looks Like on Oculus

Not convinced xb1 has the power to do what the high end pcs are.

I agree. I can see you being able to plug the rift directly into the XB1 and it sending it the flat image that would normally go to the TV, so you'd be playing on a virtual cinema screen, but whether the console has the power to render a full stereoscopic VR version of a game is questionable. We certainly won't be getting 1080p then! :rotfl:

Thats a awful demo TBH, we all know what a big screen looks like, they have been better NOT showing that. makes it look awful with the woman tilting her head all over the shop.

I dont think anyone would spend (a reported) £350 just to play xb1 games on a virtual big screen.

We need to wait and see whats in the future. Purpose made OR experiences are where it will shine, and native games that will come.

I dont think there will ever be AAA titles that support it, i liken Oculus Rift to a steering wheel, its a peripheral, some games will support it, MOST wont. The games that do it, will enhance the experience so much, you wont want to play it 'normally' again, like driving game fans playing without a steering wheel

OK now that does look pretty fudgeing cool !

If it worked like that then yes I could see me liking it.
If it just displayed it on a VR Cinema Screen then I don't think I would want it.

I can see this being immersive to a point but the fact you still need a PC is pointless IMO. They need to make it native and they need to use it for what it is, a VR headset. The biggest issue for me would still be the requirement of a pc and also what kind of hardware is needed in the pc.

Whilst at the moment VR on the X1 is unrealistic as the system becomes optimised, together with optimistation of VR code, there is a chance it may happen one day. I very much doubt it but who knows.

I think the virtual screen will be a plus point for those buying OR for PC though. I can't see it being a selling point for X1 use only though.

    https://www.oculus.com/en-us/blog/t...pc-sdk-0-6-released-and-mobile-vr-jam-voting/

For the full Rift experience, we recommend the following system:
    • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
    • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
    • 8GB+ RAM
    • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
    • 2x USB 3.0 ports
    • Windows 7 SP1 or newer

Ah yes it was me who was high. Due to reading multiple forums I somehow read it as people believing this was proper Oculus for Xbox. As long as people know what it is it's cool.

Out of interest, as I am not really in to the hardware side of stuff. How does this compare to the X1? I know a direct comparison may be difficult but just interested to see what the spec of the X1 is like compared to the specs.

It's a fairly high spec PC and blows the current consoles out the water.

In terms of Tflops the 970 is circa 3 times the performance of the XB1 (4.2 Tflops vs 1.32) and costs about the same at circa $350.

So this is basically streaming to the PC and then to the headset?

Not a virtual reality experience. Just streaming?

If that's the case I'd rather just buy a tablet. Seems the headset requires some grunt to power it so it's not looking likely we'll see anything decent from the Xbox One virtual reality wise.

Yes there is no REAL relevance for someone who just owns a xb1 console.

As you will need a high end pc and a rift and then all you can do is play your xb1 games on a virtual cinema screen.

No one will buy £1500 worth of kit just for that.

But it does link Oculus and Microsoft, and potential for things in the future, but we are a long way off full VR games direct from a xb1, i can envisage small, short games & demos in the future maybe, hey Sony are doing it with Morpheus.

My post earlier was enthusing about the Oculus Rift experience in general, not that it was coming to xb1.

Perhaps it's more about what MS can do for them on the PC side and the streaming is just a by product of it all.

Maybe, just maybe they might be looking at making a lower powered rift for Xbox. If PS4 can do something then I'm sure the Xbox One can too.

No, that's what's required to use the rift period, which explains why it's PC only.

There's a lower minimum spec but that's the recommended one.

Yeah, at this stage it's the partnership between the two that makes this exciting. Maybe not for the right now, but for the future.
