Hyperbole thread title but Oculus by letting a certificate expire have essentially bricked every single Oculus headset until they update it and because you can’t even open Oculus Home anymore it won’t be automatic either.

Just a heads up so you don’t waste your time reinstalling because it won’t work.

Changing the system clock back before the certificate expired will let it run again but creates other issues and still won’t work universally, supposedly no steam games work doing this.

i cant help but be slightly amused at the absurdity of it....... every singe rift in the world bricked because someone forgot to renew a licence. DOH!!!!

    it will be fixed soon.

some proper childish remarks on the forums. yes its poor form, unprofessional and v embarrassing yada yada yada but calling for real people to be fired on the forums for what is clearly a genuine mistake... well all i can say is i hope karma bites anyone on the ass who says that and they drop a clanger one day at work.

i know i have made a few over the years

its a VR headset, its not a life support machine in a hospital.

that said i will dig out my pitchfork tonight and polish the prongs incase it is not fixed tomorrow ;)

btw 1 comment my mate said which rings true!

Actually how sh!t is that. Microsoft's arbitrary code protection can be circumvented by putting the clock back!?

Anything that is time sensitive relies on the system clock, so this applies to any certificate-based system and isn't Microsoft-specific. If you ran a web server and fiddled with the clock, you'd open yourself up to the same security problem. Besides, you need admin privileges to adjust the clock, so not a huge deal.

Oculus should have re-signed and reissued the libraries with a new certificate, or used a certificate with a much longer expiration date or none at all. I wonder if the ZeniMax lawsuit and possible injunction had something to do with it being set so aggressively the first place? o_O Bit worrying to be sitting on such a timebomb, but I'm sure they'll get it sorted pretty quickly...

From reading the Reddit nearly all Microsoft certificates like this are only 3 years long just a bit of a cock up from someone not to remember.

You're right - the maximum is 3 years. And it's not always a quick process to get a new one either! Someone at Facebook won't be getting their bonus this year...

Not sure I agree with you here. Given that this issue has stopped the product working for their entire customer base, whoever failed to set up a system so that this cannot happen has made more than just a regular mistake. This isn't just a one-off 'oops' moment (we all have those). This is an absolute top priority risk that they've had, presumably, 3 years to address by putting systems in place to deal with it. Obviously we don't know how this was managed internally but, if there was a clear chain of responsibility, I'd say there may well be grounds for dismissal on the basis of gross incompetence.

I'm assuming that since you can't actually run the Oculus software it now can't be resolved by an behind the scenes, over the ether update. It will have to be a downloaded fix. Is this so? If true, gonna be a challenge to communicate that to all customers!

Obviously there are disgruntled gamers out there but there are also tweets from VR arcades and VR developers, people who can't risk rolling back clocks who are actually losing business because of this!

Everyone makes mistakes but this just seems so schoolboy! If this happened with something to do with security/malware or personal info such as passwords or credit card numbers this could be so much worse! There's gonna be a massive erosion in trust here, and facebook don't generally enjoy a lot of trust anyways!

Ok well they have really fudgeed up now, there’s a fix but they haven’t actually told anyone!

Honestly how hard is it to send an email, we all have to sign-in with one and we shouldn’t have to go looking for it. Should have been a mass email to explain the issue and then another for the fix!

Easy to see why this got overlooked by them now and they are just going to be inundated with support tickets along with all the retailers that sell Rifts.

Thanks for the info and the link, guys. As has been said, why no email to all their users?

Yes, I spoke too soon, just got my email. There's also mention of a $15 store credit, so I'd say they've done the right thing :)

Anyone know if they have actually fixed this or just kicked the problem down the road? i.e the device I purchased will not be blocked from working if they forget again? You wouldn't expect this to happen to a monitor, mouse or keyboard it shouldn't happen to the Rift either.

Wonder if they can filter out the Vive owners who use the Oculus store via Revive from the actual Rift owners :D

Edit: well I've not received an email, so guess they can.

It was just an expired certificate mate, so yes if they don't change the current one and that expires then it will happen again. Chances are though they will stick it in there diary this time.

Its not actually that uncommon, Quite a few PC games have been broken due to expired/invalid certs. Of the top of my head GTA V was one

    cheers

Reckon Valve probably shot off the Steam hardware survey yesterday, so Oculus' lead might be eroded a little :rotfl:

It shouldn't arbitrarily stop an entire physical device that costs hundreds of pounds from working at all. It's not the same as a multiplayer game temporarily going out of service. I guess it's just worrying that a device I bought less than a year ago has already failed due to a date the manufacturer set in software. They could have easily made it so the device still worked but no updates would be available instead.

Imagine you bought a smart tv and 7 months after purchase you couldn't even turn it on because a certificate stopped it updating it's live services. Sure it's mistake but why is it a part of the design in the first place?

It wasn’t the multiplayer it was the whole game the exe wouldn’t run, likewise the rift hardware was fine it was the software needed to to interface with the hardware.

But I take your point, it shouldn’t have happened, but it did. Best just to build a bridge mate.

    Cheers

No need to imagine, it happens currently. My smart TV has slowly become dumber since most of the services and apps have expired...
