Oculus Black Levels and SPUD

One thing that had been bothering me about my Rift were the black levels on some content. "Lost" for example suffers really badly from a greeny-gray mura haze during the darker parts. After a bit of digging it appears this is something that can be improved by disabling something called "SPUD". YMMV, but it has absolutely transformed things for me. I'm getting clean inky blacks now, with no downsides I can perceive. Details on how to disable SPUD are here:

If anyone knows for certain what SPUD is supposed to be for, I'd love to know. Is there any reason why I shouldn't have it switched off?
